Ultimate Ears Boom

Ultimate Ears, which was acquired by Logitech in 2008, has clearly produced a very popular Boom product series.

The UE Boom is a 360-degree portable speaker, which launched in the winter of 2013 and has been well-received in the New Zealand market. It's easy tounderstand why Kiwis like it due to it's clever design, great sound and portable nature.

The UE Boom doesn't appear very large when one experiences it for the first time: it's essentially a cylinder-shaped tube 60 mm in diametre and in 190 mm height that weighs 0.55 kg. Its centre of gravity is located near the the base, which makes it quite stable and it isn't likely to fall over in case someone accidentally bounces into it. There's a hook at the top so that it can be hung up.

The speaker is wireless and Bluetooth enabled, and can easily be controlled by Android and iOS mobile apps. This means that you can play and share all your songs on your phone during the barbeque or birthday party. The 15 hour battery life and high sound ensure a pleasant audio experience.

The price around $200 is relatively high compared to other portable speakers sold in New Zealand, but Kiwis perceive it as offering high value.

The successor to UE Boom is the Logitech UE Boom 2. Kiwi audiophiles should also consider the UE MegaBoom. The UE Mini Boom and the UE Roll come at a cheaper price tag and retails at around $130.

Fantastic sound quality for such a small speaker

Fantastic sound quality for such a small device. It in no way sounds hollow, or bright, or boomy. Don't get me wrong, there is great bass here, just not the over the top boomy kind. For my ears, they really nailed this one.

Fullbodied sound; not hollow; or bright; or boomy

Nothing so far

Incredibly Portable and Durable speaker for all situations with solid sound!

I use this all the time, everywhere and beat it up. Only thing I regret is getting it in white, it is a little dingy now. This thing has been tossed around, rained on, in the shower, on the beach, and used to carry around the house in different rooms. Pairs easily with my phone, laptop, or Apple TV.

Ultimate Ears UE Boom review

Ultimate Ears - the company probably best known for its on-stage, in-ear monitors and more recent consumer headphones - has released its first Bluetooth speaker to the market: UE Boom.

Great sound; loud; near-360-degree sound projection; decent battery life; waterproof; tough material; colourful and attractive design; fits in waterbottle holder (on pack or bike); can pair with multiple devices to take turns sharing music; two units can be used in true stereo (or as a pair

Not a huge amount of bass from this format; it's pricey; would like more EQ presets and customisation options within app

Brilliant little speaker

I was attracted to this by the compact size, rugged construction, very long battery life and the ability to re-charge via micro USB and not have to lug a charger around. I have not been disappointed.

Hands down one of the best portable speakers I have ever owned. These sound better than most of the competition and gets much louder too with no distortion at all. I take this almost everywhere I go and all my friends are so impressed with how good it sounds.

Loud; Clean sound; Highly portable; Bluetooth; Decent range

Sometimes cuts out

UE Boom turns off automatically after 15 mintues

By design, the Ultimate Ear's website actually states that the "UE BOOM will turn off automatically after 15 minutes without music or user interaction." As such, it will disconnect when left alone so it needs to constantly be reconnected manually.

I seen the display models sitting out at my local Walmart. I have been looking for a good blue tooth speaker for some time now. I started to try them all out. They all had decent sound.. Until I came across this one. All I can say is WoW! It blew the others away.

Ultimate Ears Boom

The Ultimate Ears Boom is a cool product. It has the looks, the build and the extra features to be an extremely attractive speaker.

Cool and funky design; Compact and portable;Easy to connect and use; Big; open sound; Plenty of detail; Good dynamics and rhythm; Great app and extra features

Could do with a touch more subtlety and refinement

Great at first, but didn't even last a year

Was initially really impressed with this speaker but within the year, it developed a really annoying vibration on the bass which rendered it unusable. Not sure if I just got a duff one, but I wouldn't recommend this, sadly, as have had several Logitech products previously & I rate the brand.
