Ultimate Ears Boom

Ultimate Ears, which was acquired by Logitech in 2008, has clearly produced a very popular Boom product series.

The UE Boom is a 360-degree portable speaker, which launched in the winter of 2013 and has been well-received in the New Zealand market. It's easy tounderstand why Kiwis like it due to it's clever design, great sound and portable nature.

The UE Boom doesn't appear very large when one experiences it for the first time: it's essentially a cylinder-shaped tube 60 mm in diametre and in 190 mm height that weighs 0.55 kg. Its centre of gravity is located near the the base, which makes it quite stable and it isn't likely to fall over in case someone accidentally bounces into it. There's a hook at the top so that it can be hung up.

The speaker is wireless and Bluetooth enabled, and can easily be controlled by Android and iOS mobile apps. This means that you can play and share all your songs on your phone during the barbeque or birthday party. The 15 hour battery life and high sound ensure a pleasant audio experience.

The price around $200 is relatively high compared to other portable speakers sold in New Zealand, but Kiwis perceive it as offering high value.

The successor to UE Boom is the Logitech UE Boom 2. Kiwi audiophiles should also consider the UE MegaBoom. The UE Mini Boom and the UE Roll come at a cheaper price tag and retails at around $130.

Ultimate Ears Mini Boom review

With innovative features, a warm and detailed sound signature, and reams of power, UE's Mini Boom makes a strong pitch as the new leader in the entry-level portable speaker category.

Warm; full midrange; Impressive bass response; Powerful max volume; Innovative features; Affordable

Won't charge your device; Tends to "dance around" with heavy bass

Ultimate Ears UE Boom

The UE Boom is a surprisingly powerful Bluetooth speaker the size of a beer can, but you need two if you want to take advantage of its coolest feature.

Solid soundscape; Powerful, clear midrange and treble; Supports two speakers for true stereo

Slightly weak bass

: Does not ship with a protective bag; More expensive than other Bluetooth speakers; Stereo pair is a pricey option

Ultimate Ears Boom Bluetooth Speaker

One of the best "little" speakers in the world, the Ultimate Ears Boom produces some incredible sound for its $229.99 price. With built-in volume controls, a robust water-resistant body and microUSB charging, the UE Boom speaker is tiny but powerful.

Ultimate Ears brings its third Bluetooth speaker offering to market in the Boom, a device that features "360-degree sound" and the ability to "Double Up," or pair two speakers together, for stereo output.

Ultimate Ears MINI BOOM Quick Review: The Best Portable Speaker On The Market Just Got Smaller

. It really lives up to its name, delivering top-notch sound quality that's nearly impossible to find in most speakers twice its size. Of course, that kind of quality comes at a price – a $200 price, to be exact.

Logitech Ultimate Ears Boom

The Logitech Ultimate Ears Boom is a handy, super portable wireless speaker. If portability is your top priority, you can't do much better for belching sound out of a small frame. Fantastic sound quality for such a small speaker

Fantastic sound quality for such a small device. It in no way sounds hollow, or bright, or boomy. Don't get me wrong, there is great bass here, just not the over the top boomy kind. For my ears, they really nailed this one.

Fullbodied sound; not hollow; or bright; or boomy
