Ultimate Ears Boom

Ultimate Ears, which was acquired by Logitech in 2008, has clearly produced a very popular Boom product series.

The UE Boom is a 360-degree portable speaker, which launched in the winter of 2013 and has been well-received in the New Zealand market. It's easy tounderstand why Kiwis like it due to it's clever design, great sound and portable nature.

The UE Boom doesn't appear very large when one experiences it for the first time: it's essentially a cylinder-shaped tube 60 mm in diametre and in 190 mm height that weighs 0.55 kg. Its centre of gravity is located near the the base, which makes it quite stable and it isn't likely to fall over in case someone accidentally bounces into it. There's a hook at the top so that it can be hung up.

The speaker is wireless and Bluetooth enabled, and can easily be controlled by Android and iOS mobile apps. This means that you can play and share all your songs on your phone during the barbeque or birthday party. The 15 hour battery life and high sound ensure a pleasant audio experience.

The price around $200 is relatively high compared to other portable speakers sold in New Zealand, but Kiwis perceive it as offering high value.

The successor to UE Boom is the Logitech UE Boom 2. Kiwi audiophiles should also consider the UE MegaBoom. The UE Mini Boom and the UE Roll come at a cheaper price tag and retails at around $130.

Incredibly Portable and Durable speaker for all situations with solid sound!

I use this all the time, everywhere and beat it up. Only thing I regret is getting it in white, it is a little dingy now. This thing has been tossed around, rained on, in the shower, on the beach, and used to carry around the house in different rooms. Pairs easily with my phone, laptop, or Apple TV.

Ultimate Ears UE Boom

One of the few areas in audio tech to have grown over the last few years is the Bluetooth speaker. Tykes who used to annoy people by playing tunes on their mobile phones on the bus have apparently grown up into adults who like the idea of a wireless portable speaker to crank tunes out of.

Seriously loud; Attractive design; Solid battery life

Expensive; Socket placement ruins waterproofing

Ultimate Ears UE Boom review

Ultimate Ears - the company probably best known for its on-stage, in-ear monitors and more recent consumer headphones - has released its first Bluetooth speaker to the market: UE Boom.

Great sound; loud; near-360-degree sound projection; decent battery life; waterproof; tough material; colourful and attractive design; fits in waterbottle holder (on pack or bike); can pair with multiple devices to take turns sharing music; two units can be used in true stereo (or as a pair

Not a huge amount of bass from this format; it's pricey; would like more EQ presets and customisation options within app

great ...but ...only for a short time!!!!

Great little speaker...great sound...very portable...and the battery life SEEMS great for the first while....then it starts to just not charge. The battery life went from about 12-15 hours to about half hour to an hour a couple months later....and you cannot replace the battery!!!!

Splash, splash, boom: UE's Boom reviewed

Ultimate Ears is joining the portable speaker revolution with the Boom, a cylindrical speaker that does more than just play back your tunes. It can also survive in more places than your average soundmaker.

Very loud; Loud; Works while being charged; Highly water resistant; Tripod mountable; Can be paired with a second Boom speaker for more sound or stereo separation

Bass isn't as strong as you might like; Tripod mount is very; very hard to remove the first time

The AU$200 UE Boom is a versatile and durable wireless Bluetooth speaker that plays loud and is great for on-the-go use.

Compact; durable and loud; Water- and stain-resistant; 15 hours of battery life; Speakerphone capabilities

With the vast (and ever-growing) sea of audio products available, it becomes harder and harder to get noticed. It takes the right combination of elements to get that attention and then deliver with quality that people will love and keep.
