PlayStation VR is developed specifically for the PlayStation platform with its popular and established user base. Head and motion sensors precicely track the gamer's movement. The quality of Playstation VR can't match that Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, but it's also priced lower. It was announced in March 2016.

A newer model Sony Playstation VR2 was released in February 2022.

PlayStation VR review

PlayStation VR is an affordable introduction to quality VR. Many of the experiences aren't as crisp as the ones found on the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, but, for a system that uses a PS4 instead of an expensive PC gaming rig, we're not complaining. Plus, a recent price reduction makes it even more appealing.
Pros:
  • Affordable
  • Near PC-quality performance
  • Good selection of games
Cons:
  • Doesn't come with required accessories
  • Poor job sealing out light
  • Spotty motion controller tracking

Good value, works great. Durable build

I don't know how PSVR compares to other VR devices, but this was definitely a good value for the money. I had some minor gripes with it, mostly difficulty getting it in the right position on my head, but after using it for a few weeks I can throw it on in under a minute and play. Works great.

It's like being outside...

This is a really good piece of kit, I am still getting into it, but if my experience of flying an X Wing fighter is anything to go by, I will be spending too much time with this!

Thrilling and immersive

I have had it for a few weeks now, and the experience itself is exactly how I was hoping it would be. It feels like you are right in whatever game you put in. I do have to say though, the cords are a bit ridiculous.

Despite the cable nightmare, the lower-resolution screen and expensive games catalogue, I couldn't recommend picking up PlayStation VR more. It's an absolute blast and, if you can afford the £350 price tag, a must-buy for any avid PS4 fan and gamer.

Sony PlayStation VR Review

The Sony PlayStation VR headset brings powerful, compelling virtual reality, with motion control support, to the PlayStation 4. Sony's virtual reality system, the PlayStation VR, is designed for use with the PlayStation 4 or PS4 Pro. It's a powerful accessory that lags only a hair behind the PC-powered HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in specs, and is far less expensive, especially when you put the required PS4 up against the pricier VR-ready PCs the Vive and Rift require. In addition, its graphical capabilities and motion-tracking far exceed smartphone-based VR headsets like the Samsung Gear VR. Virtual reality is still a technical novelty you need to be committed to before you spend the cash, but PlayStation VR stands out in price and ease of use. As of September 1, the PS VR will no longer be available on its own as just a headset. Instead, it will be sold only in one of two bundles: a PS VR with a PlayStation Camera (which is required to use the headset) for $399, and a PS VR with a PlayStation Camera and two Move controllers (which are optional, but enable motion controls) for $449. The camera bundle matches...
Pros:
  • Immersive VR experience
  • Works with non-VR apps and games
  • Motion control support
  • Low cost of entry compared with PC-based headsets
Cons:
  • Requires PlayStation Camera, which is not included
  • Slightly less powerful than its main competitors
  • Some motion-tracking hiccups when playing in brightly lit rooms
