Sony Alpha 7R II Review

The last time I laid hands on a Sony Alpha 7R was just after its launch, and at the time I remember holding onto what felt like something truly special. The Alpha 7R stood out from all other cameras for a number of reasons.
Pros:
  • + Stunning image quality with high levels of detail
  • + Refined body design with improved handling characteristics
  • + Wide autofocus coverage across the frame
  • + Superb 5-axis image stabilisation to correct for camera shake
Cons:
  • Large file sizes
  • Low battery life (290 shots using viewfinder
  • Lacks touchscreen functionality

Best Camera of 2015

The camera is the best of both worlds. It can shoot high resolution pictures and 4k video in one tiny package. There are some drawbacks like poor selection of native lenses, the jello effect with videos and some autofocus issues, but the positives outweigh the negatives of this camera.

A compact masterpiece.

"I am fortunate enough to own a Sony A7RII. I made my pre-order early with Henry's and very glad I did so! The Sony A7RII is a truly stunning piece of equipment. In my few weeks of owning this camera, I have nothing but amazing things to say about it.

Sony Alpha A7R II Review

The Sony Alpha A7R Mark II is the World's first full-frame camera with a 42.4 megapixel backlit CMOS sensor, which should deliver improved noise performance. The camera also offers internal 4K video recording, plus a 399-point hybrid AF system, and an updated design compared to the 36 megapixel A7R...
Pros:
  • Excellent image quality possible
  • 5-axis image stabilisation system
  • Impressive noise performance considering high resolution
  • Improved range of high quality lenses available
  • Includes 2 batteries and a charger in the box
  • Extended ISO range
  • 4K video recording
  • Wi-Fi and NFC
  • Sony PlayMemories...
Cons:
  • 5fps continuous shooting could be too slow for some
  • USB3 would speed up image transfers

A7R Mark 2

The camera is used for landscape, floral and 'things found' abstract work, often in low light for which its noise:iso ability and resolution is ideal. The 16 to 35 lens is fantastic and I can hardly fault the 70 to 200 G series zoom, but being able to use Leica, Petzval etc. as well is the clincher.
Pros:
  • Easy To Use
  • Excellent In Low Light
  • Fast Shutter Speed
  • Good Sized Screen
  • Great Resolution
  • Rugged

Sony has had ambitious plans for the camera market ever since it bought Konica Minolta's camera business in 2006. But after some initial excitement there were only sporadic periods of activity, and the attention of many photographers and industry observers waned somewhat.
Pros:
  • High-resolution full-frame sensor
  • Small
  • weather-sealed body
  • High-end video features including in-camera 4K recording
Cons:
  • Menu needs streamlining
  • Video record button awkwardly placed
  • Relatively limited range of lenses

Sony A7R II review

We know what you’re thinking: this camera costs over two and half grand, and that doesn’t even include a lens. And you’re right: the A7R II is eye-wateringly expensive – about £1,000 more than the original A7R was at launch. But it’s just so, so good. While it’s technically a “mirrorless camera” or a “compact system camera”, the drawbacks and disadvantages that those names convey don’t apply here. In the A7R II, Sony has made a no- compromise camera that combines impeccable build quality with a class-leading full-frame sensor, 5-axis image stabilisation, huge ISO range, fast autofocus, an excellent viewfinder and 4K video recording. And it’s far more compact than a DSLR. In short, it’s one of the best cameras you can buy today, and certainly the finest camera Sony has yet made.
Pros:
  • Superb image quality
  • Excellent low light capabilities
  • Compact given its specs
Cons:
  • Video record button is annoyingly placed
  • We can’t afford one
