In the shop I got a chance to play with it using a a350 alpha body from the display case. It was very well balanced on the a350. At home I mounted it on my a700 and it felt as good as the a350 balancing wise.
Pros:
  • Solid build quality
  • Professional look
  • Amazing colors
  • great sharpness
  • I love to keep zooming in to the full size photos and it's still very sharp
  • f/2.8
  • Perfect focal lengths
  • quiet
  • fast
  • and accurate AF
  • Sony/Konica Minolta

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G Lens

The price tag reflects the build quality and performance of Sony's fast 70-200mm f/2.8 G lens. Compatible with APS-C format and 35mm sized sensor cameras, it covers a focal length range of 105-300mm with the former.

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G

This is the sort of lens that you whip out (or perhaps the more apt term is lug out) when you want to make a statement. Its focal length covers a generous reach from a more standard 70mm through to a telephoto 200mm and weighing in at 1.34kg it's certainly likely to cause a large protrusion in your...
Pros:
  • Excellent build quality
  • Fast maximum aperture
Cons:
  • Incredibly heavy
  • Incredibly expensive meaning it's really only suited to full-frame Sony dSLRs

The Sony 70-200mm F2.8 G is without doubt an excellent lens. Don't be fooled by the fact that it's based on a 7-year old Minolta design - it's at least a match for the more recent third party options from Tamron and Sigma, and only just outperformed by Nikon's very latest (and pricey) 70-200mm F2.8...
Pros:
  • Excellent image quality on full frame
  • very good on APS-C
  • Superb build quality
  • Fast
  • silent autofocus with manual override
  • Well-placed AF stop buttons
Cons:
  • A bit soft wide open at the telephoto end on APS-C
  • No dust or moisture sealing (which we'd expect in a 'Pro' level lens
  • Slightly suspect image quality at closest focus (very soft indeed at F2.8
  • Extremely expensive compared to third party alternatives

Sony 70-200mm F2.8 G review

Sony's 70-200mm F2.8 G may be based on a 2003 Minolta design, but it's still the best fast telezoom available for Alpha mount users. However it's very pricey in comparison to the Sigma and Tamron alternatives, which are almost as good.
Pros:
  • Professionals and advanced amateurs looking for high optical performance from a telephoto zoom
Cons:
  • Applications which favor portability and convenience over all-out image quality

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SAL-70200G review by slawrencephoto

I would recommend this lens to anyone. I traded my 70-300G for this lens and although I miss the extra 100mm the image quality more than makes up for it.
Pros:
  • IQ
  • Sharp
  • Build Quality
Cons:
  • Weight

The 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is very popular, thanks to its speed and versatility, but is the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G worth spending your money on? The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G is available only for Sony DSLRs.
