Shure's Beta line offers various "improvements" to the mics in the SM line, featuring subtle changes across the microphone specs. Although similar to the SM family of products, the Beta series mics have a slightly different sound that makes them sometimes complimentary to, and other times a great...
There are some drawbacks to consider about the SM57. While it does not need phantom power, it does need a lot of gain at the preamp when recording softer sounds. That can bring in more noise from the preamp (the Mic itself is generally quiet).
I bought two A2WS-BK Black Foam Locking Windscreens for my SM57s in order to add an impressive 'Presidential' look to the podium when I run sound for a speaker. They also come in handy when I get a request from some vocalists who prefer singing on a Shure 57 over the standard Shure 58.

Highs and mids sound great Natural; warm feel great for string instruments durable cardioid patterned
not good for drum recording can get a little messy on the low end
Great deal on a bunch of microphones. I had to get a bunch of mics together for a 5 piece acoustic band, I only owned a SM 57 and a couple of SM58's. It's not cheap, but for a full bands worth of mics that are road tested and decent sounding, it's pretty reasonable.
Shure SM 57 is one of the best mics on the market that are actually affordable and wont cost you an arm and a leg. Plus most all music stores even local stores (not big chain stores) carry this line of mics from Shure. The
Everybody who runs a pro recording studio has at least one Shure SM57 and most PA companies will have half a dozen. The reason is that that will make a decent job of recording most things and really for the snare drum it's the recording microphone of choice over mics costing 10 times as much.
This is possibly the best microphone I have bought over the years. It has a great dynamic range and a very true to source sound reproduction. It's a very rugged bit of equipment! The casing is solid and heavy and I've never had any problems with either of mine.
Great sound, Great build quality ; ; .

After getting advice from sound technician friends and many musicians who all choice Shure as a favourite brand for microphones, we decided to invest in a couple of SM57's as part of our live events PA system setup.
