GoPro’s smoothest operator ever, and a brilliant flagship
Excellent image stabilisation; Good all-round image quality; Compact; waterproof and tough
Battery drains quickly with 4K; HEVC needs relatively new hardware
Of GoPro's recent releases, it's the Hero 7 Black that's the flagship model and the one hat will put the GoPro name back in the spotlight.
The biggest talking point is the Hypersmooth feature, one of the more revolutionary breakthroughs in the company's history. GoPro call it "the best in-camera video stabilisation in any camera, ever” and when you see 4K/60fps mode footage using the Hypersmooth feature, it is hard to argue against that claim.
Think of standard time-lapse, where a camera takes frequent still shots and plays them back in a somewhat stilted and choppy sequence. Now think of a major leap forward: a super smooth, stabilized time lapse video allowing for a silky progression through a scene. That's what Time Warp delivers.
The Hero 7 Black is it is the first GoPro capable of livestreaming to sites like Facebook, Vimeo and YouTube, with more sites due to come online.
The SuperPhoto feature is GoPro’s response to intelligent auto modes on smartphones which apply the right camera settings by automatically recognising certain scenes. It’s made even easier thanks to Voice Control, which responds to 16 different commands including "GoPro, take a photo".
That's the challenge laid down by GoPro. They are certainly talking up the toughness of the Hero 7 Black; it's a device that can handle the rough and tumble of the intense action its capturing, while it is waterproof down to an impressive 10 metres.

Don’t mistake the Hero 7 Black for a small update. It may look similar to the Hero 6 and match the resolution and framerate, but when it comes to performance, it’s a huge leap forward.
HyperSmooth; Live Streaming; Time Warp Video; Expensive; More steps to change frame rates and resolution; Still no Fluro option; Best GoPro lighting rigs; How to get great GoPro audio

£380 might seem like a lot to pay for a tiny action cam, but we think it’s worth it for the Hero7 Black. It’s basically the excellent Hero6 Black (a five-star action cam that cost £500 at the time of its release last year) with a bunch of improvements added – the most useful of which being the incredibly effective HyperSmooth image stabilisation. HyperSmooth makes a huge impact on videos, which means we’d even suggest owners of the Hero6 Black give some thought into the upgrade. GoPro are making it easier to create top quality shareable video content across social channels too, so expect to see your instagram stories feed get a bit more action-packed. It’s great to see a company like GoPro continue to innovate in ways that are genuinely valuable to its main customer base, and the Hero7 Black feels like the best camera GoPro has made in years.

While there are many companies that make action cameras, there's only one name that most professionals consider when creating kick-ass content. GoPro practically invented the market, and their flagship Hero 7 Black is the best they've ever made.
GoPro is sticking to an annual refresh cycle for its entire lineup, and right on cue, the company has launched its seventh generation of Hero action cameras for 2019. This year GoPro has released not one but three cameras - the Hero 7 Black, Hero 7 Silver, and Hero 7 White.
