GoPro Hero 7 Black

Of GoPro's recent releases, it's the Hero 7 Black that's the flagship model and the one hat will put the GoPro name back in the spotlight.

Everyone's talking about Hypersmooth

The biggest talking point is the Hypersmooth feature, one of the more revolutionary breakthroughs in the company's history. GoPro call it "the best in-camera video stabilisation in any camera, ever” and when you see 4K/60fps mode footage using the Hypersmooth feature, it is hard to argue against that claim.

Let’s do the Time Warp

Think of standard time-lapse, where a camera takes frequent still shots and plays them back in a somewhat stilted and choppy sequence. Now think of a major leap forward: a super smooth, stabilized time lapse video allowing for a silky progression through a scene. That's what Time Warp delivers.

Going live

The Hero 7 Black is it is the first GoPro capable of livestreaming to sites like Facebook, Vimeo and YouTube, with more sites due to come online.

No ordinary photo

The SuperPhoto feature is GoPro’s response to intelligent auto modes on smartphones which apply the right camera settings by automatically recognising certain scenes. It’s made even easier thanks to Voice Control, which responds to 16 different commands including "GoPro, take a photo".

Dunk it. Drop it. Crash it.

That's the challenge laid down by GoPro. They are certainly talking up the toughness of the Hero 7 Black; it's a device that can handle the rough and tumble of the intense action its capturing, while it is waterproof down to an impressive 10 metres.

GoPro Hero7 Black

The Hero7 Black replaces the Hero6 Black as our Editors' Choice. While it's improvements aren't groundbreaking, they're palpable. If you bought a new GoPro just a year ago you'll probably want to skip this upgrade-unless stabilization at 4K 60fps is a must-have-but if you've got an older model, now...

Compact, rugged design; Waterproof to 33 feet; 4K 60fps recording with stabilization; Up to 240fps at 1080p; Voice control; Smartphone app with streaming support

Battery life could be better; Wi-Fi file transfer time can be lengthy

Mashable Choice highlights the best of everything we cover, have experienced first-hand and would recommend to others. Just when I thought there were no more meaningful ways to improve an action camera, GoPro goes and releases the new Hero 7 Black .

Crazy smooth video stabilization; Easier-to-use touchscreen UI; Vertical video capture; Super simple sharing to Instagram Stories

No real battery improvement; Low-light footage is a little soft

GoPro Hero7: The Smoothest-Looking Action Cam Yet

GoPro's latest action camera delivers impressively smooth footage while introducing other welcome features like livestreaming and an enhanced time-lapse mode for an attractive price.

Shoots impressively smooth video; Improved touch controls on viewfinder; TimeWarp feature takes great time-lapse videos; Sharp 4K videos; Great price for a full-featured action camera

Livestreaming could use some tweaks; Fast charging requires you to buy a separate accessory; Still images can be hit-or-miss

GoPro Hero 7 Black In-Depth Review

There's no doubt that GoPro has improved upon the Hero 6 lineup. While the top-level specs may not sound like a lot has changed, as you can see, there's actually more than meets the eye. The TimeWarp feature is super cool and really does make a big difference over more conventional time-lapses.

GoPro Hero7 Black review

So what can we conclude so far The inclusion of the very effective HyperSmooth stabilization is significant, and makes the GoPro Hero7 Black far better suited for bumpier adventures than before – and the fact that the camera is no more expensive because of it is something for which GoPro deserves...

Great 4K video and image quality; HyperSmooth is very effective; TimeWarp is great fun; Useful UI improvements

Can struggle with voice commands; Screen unresponsive at times; Slow-mo footage only output through app or software; Many cheaper options

Ever wondered why GoPro's flagship camera is called "the Black" but has always been silver or gray Well, with the Hero 7, the company has righted that wrong. Cognitive dissonance aside, there are a few other things fixed with this year's update, but the big question is: Are they the issues that...

GoPro Hero7 Black review

£380 might seem like a lot to pay for a tiny action cam, but we think it’s worth it for the Hero7 Black. It’s basically the excellent Hero6 Black (a five-star action cam that cost £500 at the time of its release last year) with a bunch of improvements added – the most useful of which being the incredibly effective HyperSmooth image stabilisation. HyperSmooth makes a huge impact on videos, which means we’d even suggest owners of the Hero6 Black give some thought into the upgrade. GoPro are making it easier to create top quality shareable video content across social channels too, so expect to see your instagram stories feed get a bit more action-packed. It’s great to see a company like GoPro continue to innovate in ways that are genuinely valuable to its main customer base, and the Hero7 Black feels like the best camera GoPro has made in years.
