ADATA Premier Pro SP920 SSD Family Review

A few weeks back, we took a look at a new series of solid state drives from Crucial, the M550 , which leveraged Marvell controller technology, 20nm MLC NAND flash memory, and firmware optimizations gleaned from the last couple of years of SATA SSD advancements.

ADATA Premier Pro SP920 SSD (512GB) Review – An Exceptional SSD At A Great Price

ADATA has definitely proven that they are a force to be reckoned with so far this year. We first checked in with them at CES, where we got to see their newly coloured DRAM modules, wireless device charging technology, as well as their line up of new solid state drives.

ADATA Premier Pro SP920 2.5" SSD Full Capacity Roundup - Low Cost High Performance

I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the ADATA SP920 Series. While the smaller capacities suffer from some write speed limiting, the whole line performs extremely well in reads, and the larger capacity points give the best competition out there a run for their money.

This review feels like dejà vu from a week ago...right around the time we wrote the M550 1TB. The SP920 and the M550 are nearly identical, but that's not a bad thing for the ADATA SP920 or you. Both drives are very good, but ADATA picked up the slack where Crucial fell short.

ADATA SP920 SSD Review – Capacity, Speed, Value and Something Unexpected

For those new to the SSD world, controller advance is the make it or break it of this game and this release, as was that of the Crucial M550 SSD before it, is the result of Marvell achieving faster and more efficient in their SS9100 series controller line.

ADATA SP920 (128GB, 256GB, 512GB & 1TB) Review

To be honest, I don't have much to add to the conclusion of the M550 review. At 512GB and 1TB, the SP920 is an exact match with the M550. The 128GB and 256GB models lose some performance compared to the M550 due to fewer NAND dies but especially at 256GB the difference is rather insignificant.

ADATA Premier Pro SP920 256GB Solid State Drive Review

At the start of the review is asked what is the significance of this SSD release and even though this is not the first time we have seen synchronous NAND used in the design of a SSD, what ADATA have done with the drive as a whole is far more important and thus worth shouting about.

Consistent drive performance throughout the drives lifespan; High levels of performance in most of the benchmark areas; Ultra low price per GB of storage; Synchronous NAND optimised with a Marvell controller; Designed for multimedia applications

Write performance levels slightly lower than other drives at this level

ADATA Premier Pro SP920 512GB SSD Review

The ADATA Premiere Pro SP920 drive is a very reasonably priced mainstream SSD that really shines at larger capacities.
