A two-bay network storage device with excellent features and performance
Synology's DiskStation DS212j is a two-bay network attached storage (NAS) device that's aimed at the home and small office markets. It doesn't ship with any hard drives, so you'll have to source one or two of your own 3.5in SATA disks before you can get started.

I recently ordered the Synology 212j and so far have been incredibly impressed with it. The interface, applications and features are all by far more than I'd expected from a simple NAS.

We've long been fans of Synology's networked media devices, yet they've always missed out on that fifth star.
Pros:
- Compact and quiet
- great multimedia functionality
- choose your own hard drives

- Not cheap
- especially given the current cost of separate hard drives

Slottting in at the bottom of Synology's two-bay range of NAS devices, the humble DS212j cuts back on connectivity. There's no sign of USB 3, eSATA or hot-swappable drive bays. Instead, Synology delivers a high-performance NAS device at minimal cost.

Behaves like it says. Price matched it to $200 and at that price a good deal - I no longer have to keep a whole machine running 24/7. Performance seems pretty good. The P2P service could be a bit more flexible - you don't get a lot of configuration options compared to PC based clients - but works...

Synology DS212j review
Its most home-friendly unit is typical of the company's output: it looks a bit utilitarian, but allows easy access to the twin-drive bay for adding SATA hard disks, is a doddle to set up, and serves up your content fuss-free.
