A two-bay network storage device with excellent features and performance
Synology's DiskStation DS212j is a two-bay network attached storage (NAS) device that's aimed at the home and small office markets. It doesn't ship with any hard drives, so you'll have to source one or two of your own 3.5in SATA disks before you can get started.
Pros:
- Performance
- Features
- Was reliable
Cons:
- Hardware felt flimsy
- Can take a while to learn all the features

Synology DS212j and DSM 4.0 Review
We last looked at one of Synology's budget dual-bay NAS enclosures over a year ago and not only has the company launched a new generation since then (see our review of the DS212+ ), but it's released a revamped version of its operating system too, which sports several interesting features.

Synology DS212j
Slottting in at the bottom of Synology's two-bay range of NAS devices, the humble DS212j cuts back on connectivity. There's no sign of USB 3, eSATA or hot-swappable drive bays. Instead, Synology delivers a high-performance NAS device at minimal cost.

Today we are testing the Synology DS212j, an entry level NAS that comes at an attractive price of $199. Even at that price, the NAS is equipped with a huge list of features and offers good power savings potential since it needs only 17.6W in operation.

Great little box
So I got this close to a year ago, and am finally getting around to a review. The box ran great, it filled a ton of roles when I first got it, but it did them all slowly. I was able to put Plex on the box, Sabnzbd, a web server, etc. Everything worked, just at 1/3 the speed of my current network.
Pros:
- Easy to setup Good amount of applications available Can fill many roles
Cons:
- Its not fast on its own

Working well!
Got this as a replacement for NAS device that was showing its age and not big enough. I have put a pair of 4TB WD Red drives in it and it is working well. It was very easy to set up and on my 1GB LAN I get good transfer speeds. The software is good as well.
