Synology puts some serious NAS power on your desktop
Excellent performance; Feature-packed DSM software; Snapshot Replication app; Very quiet
No physical drive security
I really like the Synology software, I'm running my own VPN server so that I can access my network from outside when staying away from home, I use download station, I have IP cameras with Surveillance Station, I have installed various other packages too and very happy.
I already had been using Synology's products in the past. I had a DS411j, which is their lowest cost 4-bay NAS. Back then, I said to myself "no need for lots of RAM, I'm just going to use it for storage".
Fast; VERY fast; Low cost; both in terms of power and hardware; Expandable storage using DX513
None
I just started to use the DS916+. It was easy to set up. The product is very flexible and provides many options. I gave it four stars and not five because there is a lot to learn and significant configuration options that take time. My current configuration is two disks (4TB each) as raid 1.
This is much more than just a NAS and easy to setup.
It's been a couple of years since Synology revamped its entry-level four-bay network-attached storage appliance, but straight out of the factory we have the DS418j. Designed for users that want a lot of storage at a more reasonable price, this is a NAS for busy individuals or small businesses with...
I own 2 4 bay Synolgy Diskstations. I have had nothing but problems with their apps. Documentation is sparse. Support can't seem to help unless you give them access to you system. I'm not comfortable giving strangers access to my computers and network. Do your own boycott of this Chinese company.
The DiskStation DS916+ is the latest addition to the the Synology Plus product line aimed at Workgroups and Small & Medium Business users. The 4-Bay DS916+ features a Quad-core Intel processor and expandable memory.
DSM O/S; Btrfs file support; 4K transcoding; Expandability via expansion unit
No physical security on drive bays
Synology's NAS boxes often get an upgraded on a two-year cycle. And, while in that time the outside changed very little, the inside of four-bay ‘j Series' NAS has been entirely overhauled.
