Review of the Sony SRS-XB31 Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

When you're choosing speakers, you generally want to go as large as possible. Bigger speaker designs are capable of housing larger drivers, and more of them. One consequence of that is you often can experience fairly steady improvements in sound quality as the physical size of speakers are...

This is a speaker with a difference. Yes you get exceptional sound but this provides some eye candy at the same time. The Sony SRS-XB31 ($229) is the medium size speaker in the Extra Bass family sitting between the XB21 (149) and the XB41 ($269).

Puts in a light show; Sleek design; Excellent audio; Lots of control within the app; Waterproof

Sound cuts out occasionally; but not often

Where more-dedicated portable speaker brands are going smarter, Sony's latest effort in the space opts to go bassier - to mostly-positive results. There's something appealing to that back-to-basics approach here - and the lower price-tag doesn't hurt either.

Solid bass; Good price

Minimal smarts; Clunky app

Sony EXTRA BASS SRS-XB31 Review

The SRS-XB31 certainly lived up to the hype it first gave us during our initial hands-on. It truly is a premium looking rugged speakers with amazing overall audio quality, solid structure, and superb battery life.

Premium build; Water and Dust resistance; Amazing audio quality; Long battery life; Power bank feature; Wireless Party Chain

A bit expensive

Sony SRS-XB31 Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker - White, Listen all day and night with up 24 hours of battery life , Build energy with a multicolored line light and flashing strobe

I have the older version of this speaker, this newer version has slightly better sound quality. The battery doesn't seem to last quite as long, but that could be due to lights or using it more at the moment. Easy to setup, and on special it is unbeatable value for money.

Plays ok, but poorly designed and over complicated.

Sound is ok, but you have to download the app in order to change the preset base which is far too deep for clarity. The flip back that exposes some of the controls is impossible to see as they are also in black plastic and a real design disaster.

Great product!!!

The product is amazing. Sounding is great and goes loud without compromising on the quality of the sound. The speakers are easy to transport and have a sleek look. In addition they came in a timely manner and were packaged well! Highly recommend!

Fantastic sound quality from this speaker - great Christmas present. The lights and percussion features are so much fun. Haven't tested the waterproofing yet but otherwise it's excellent.
