Sony PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR is developed specifically for the PlayStation platform with its popular and established user base. Head and motion sensors precicely track the gamer's movement. The quality of Playstation VR can't match that Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, but it's also priced lower. It was announced in March 2016.

Sony PlayStation VR review: You know what? Sony did it. The PSVR is actually pretty great

It looks like 2016 is living up to its billing as the "year of virtual reality," with products at the high end (HTC Vive and Oculus Rift) and in the mobile arena (Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, Google Daydream) offering VR options across the spectrum.

While the motion tracking trails its PC VR counterparts, Sony's PlayStation VR otherwise crams a solid and satisfying virtual reality experience into an existing PS4 game console.

The PlayStation VR is the most accessible, affordable and user-friendly full VR option on the market; Sony has promised support from a long list of developers down the track but the immediate launch games are pretty solid as well.

Its single-camera tracking system occasionally feels lacking and you may have trouble when you turn around; The PSVR's graphical fidelity is occasionally noticeably lower than what's possible with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Sony PlayStation VR Review

Sony's virtual reality system, the PlayStation VR, is designed for use with the PlayStation 4 or PS4 Pro. It's a powerful accessory that lags only a hair behind the PC-powered HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in specs, and is far less expensive, especially when you put the required PS4 up against the pricier VR-ready PCs the Vive and Rift require. In addition, its graphical capabilities and motion-tracking far exceed smartphone-based VR headsets like the Samsung Gear VR. Virtual reality is still a technical novelty you need to be committed to before you spend the cash, but PlayStation VR stands out in price and ease of use. As of September 1, the PS VR will no longer be available on its own as just a headset. Instead, it will be sold only in one of two bundles: a PS VR with a PlayStation Camera (which is required to use the headset) for $399, and a PS VR with a PlayStation Camera and two Move controllers (which are optional, but enable motion controls) for $449. The camera bundle matches...

The Sony PlayStation VR headset brings powerful, compelling virtual reality, with motion control support, to the PlayStation 4.

Immersive VR experience; Works with non-VR apps and games; Motion control support; Low cost of entry compared with PC-based headsets

Requires PlayStation Camera, which is not included; Slightly less powerful than its main competitors; Some motion-tracking hiccups when playing in brightly lit rooms

PlayStation VR review

PlayStation VR is an affordable introduction to quality VR. Many of the experiences aren't as crisp as the ones found on the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, but, for a system that uses a PS4 instead of an expensive PC gaming rig, we're not complaining. Plus, a recent price reduction makes it even more appealing.

Affordable; Near PC-quality performance; Good selection of games;

Doesn't come with required accessories; Poor job sealing out light; Spotty motion controller tracking

Sony PlayStation VR review review

Very comfortable; Much more affordable than its rivals; Incredibly smooth, fluid and immersive VR; Some of the early content is amazing;

Some inconsistencies to head and controller tracking; Relatively small play area; A lot of the initial games are very short ‘experiences’; Some odd design decisions;
