Sony PlayStation 5 review

The PS5’s launch lineup is hardly rammed with exclusive games, but Miles Morales is a spectacular 10-hour adventure that already shows the the PS5 flexing its considerable graphical muscle, Demon’s Souls might well be one of the best-looking games ever made, and Sackboy and Astro’s Playroom are perfect for Christmas morning. And with several high-profile first-party games confirmed for the first half of next year, given Sony’s hit rate, investing in a PS5 now seems a safe bet. Games look and feel brilliant from day one, long load times are a thing of the past, and the DualSense is the most fascinating controller since the Wii Remote. We just hope developers think about how to make use of it. While its brash, hulking design means the PS5 is possibly going to make a bad first impression with some, spend 10 minutes playing games on one and we think it’ll win anyone over - and then some.

Rock solid 4K/60fps gameplay ; Very fast ; DualSense has huge potential; Astro’s Playroom is some freebie ; Promise of hardware-pushing exclusives;

Storage will fill up very quickly; Divisive looks to say the least; Nothing to match the Xbox Series X’s Quick Resume ;

Sony PlayStation 5 review: A glorious new era

As a games machine the PS5 is currently the best out there – thanks to an excellent lineup and some truly innovative additions. It's not the best 4K Blu-ray player or media streamer though, if that's your main concern. However, we doubt that will really bother too many and, we feel, the best is still yet to come.

Up to 4K 60fps gameplay as standard; 120fps-enabled; Silent running (hoorah!); Superb new user experience; Extremely fast loading times; Free PS5 game in the form of Astro's Playroom; Backward compatible with thousands of PS4 titles;

It's a monster that some might struggle to find a home for; The 825GB internal SSD only has 667GB available to the user; No Dolby Vision nor Dolby Atmos; Media app support is sparse;

PS5 review: Exclusive games power Sony's sky-high space-age console

My PS4 almost made it. It was a launch-day PlayStation 4 from 2013, and it worked great right up until the last few months, like it knew it was about to get the Marie Kondo treatment and replaced by the new, much-advanced PS5. The seven-year-old system still played games fine, but the optical drive mechanism grew confused, giving off random beeps, as if it were trying to eject a ghost disc. Read More: PS5 Restock Tracker: Where to find a console

Sony's PlayStation 5 scores with the big game exclusives that gamers want. It's also tall and blindingly white.

Fantastic new controller; Streamlined UI puts games first; Great day-one exclusive game lineup; Included Astro's Playroom game is fantastic;

The bold design is borderline impractical for small spaces; Syncing up cloud saves can be a pain; I don't love the clunky-feeling plastic stand; Some games force you to choose between resolution, frame rate and ray tracing;

Sony PlayStation 5 review: King of the current-gen?

As the PS5 matures it's clear that it is a beast of a machine, both in potential and actual size. Its DualSense controller takes gaming to a new level with its extra features, while the speed of its internal SSD storage is a true game changer. Perhaps best of all though is the continuingly impressive game support, with 4K 60fps graphics almost a default. It's all very impressive stuff.
