Usually when big-name electronics manufacturers get into audio, they do so casually. Their headphones are more targeted towards the average consumer, with decent quality and a reachable price. Buyer's Guide: Headphones Sony is different, though.

I often have a habit of writing Sony headphones off as old, boring headphones. Maybe because Sony's monitors have been around since Jesus was a Cub Scout, or maybe because Sony's offerings get overshadowed by those from other manufacturers. Well, the $289 Sony MDR-1a just landed on my desk.

Very Good Headphones

Pros: These Sony headphones are light, comfortable for wearing for long periods, and have great sound. They are not 100% faithful 'studio reference' headphones, with a touch more both bass and treble - but not enough to offend the ears.

Amazing clarity!

These are absolutely the most amazing headphones I have ever used or owned. They truly knock it out of the park in all aspects. -Sound quality is incredible. Everything sounds so clear and crisp that I can't imagine my music sounding much better. Clear bass with great mids and treble.

Great while they lasted

I bought these a few months ago and loved them from the start. That is, until the left side crapped out. If I wiggle the chord around a bit, sometimes I'm lucky enough to get it to work, but otherwise it's completely devoid of sound. Not worth the buy for such a short use period.

Comfortable portable Hifi fools The sound can be called soft and easy-listening. They have a nice resolution in midrange and tweeter and the sound never gets hard. However, it feels something straightforward and not very linear.
