Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM

The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM is a high-end, ultra-wide zoom with a large, constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range. While it features many of Sony’s most advanced features, the lens I’m reviewing today is only the first generation of the lens, and Sony also has a “GM II” version...
Pros:
  • Best-in-class flare and distortion performance, Strong sharpness throughout the zoom and aperture range, Very fast autofocus with good low-light focusing capabilities, Excellent build quality with good weather sealing, Advanced handling features befitting a professional lens, Less expensive than...
Cons:
  • Noticeable field curvature at the longer focal lengths, An extending barrel when zooming is not ideal for working in harsh conditions

Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM Review

The Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM is a premium wide-angle zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras that promises to deliver extremely crisp images. Sony is expanding its premium G Master lens line with an f/2.8 zoom that covers an ultra-wide angle field of view. The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM ($2,199.99) is smaller and lighter than competing lenses for SLR systems—a benefit of a mirrorless system design—while maintaining the dust- and moisture-resistant build that is a key feature of the FE lens system. It matches a premium design with top-end optics, delivering strong results both in the field and in the lab. It's an expensive lens, but backs up its price with excellent peformance, and earns our Editors' Choice. Design The 16-35mm measures 4.8 by 3.5 inches (HD), weighs 1.5 pounds, and supports 82mm front filters. It's bigger all around than Sony's own f/4 take on the design, the Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS, which measures 3.9 by 3.1 inches, weighs 1.1 pounds, and supports 72mm front filters. The F2.8 zoom is part of the G Master series. It's Sony's designation for its most premium lenses, which are designed to deliver the...
Pros:
  • Fixed f/2.8 aperture
  • Wide-angle coverage
  • Quick autofocus
  • Focus Hold button
  • Dust and moisture resistant
Cons:
  • Omits in-lens stabilization
  • Edge softness at 35mm
  • Dim corners at f/2.8
  • Some distortion

Light and High Resolution Lens

It is a light and high resolution lens, better than Sony 24-70mm F2.8 GM Lens. I use it for the wedding events with great results.

Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM ( SEL1635GM ) - Review / Test Report

If you want to play a role in the professional (full format) market you have to offer a variety of lenses and at the center of such a system, there's the holy trinity of f/2.8 zoom lenses - a 16-35mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8.

Miracle of a lens

First of all, its already mind blowing enough that a f/2.8 zoom weighs in at 680g. On top of that, throw in the optical quality of arguably the best wide angle zoom of all time, and what you have is seemingly a miracle of a lens for which a $2200 price tag starts to seem reasonable.

Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM Lens - Brand New review

(24mm, F2.8, 1/60, ISO 100) As a standard zoom lens, the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM is certainly top notch. It doesn't have that charisma of the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 or the Sony 85mm F1.4 GM that you immediately see as soon as you take your first shot.
Pros:
  • Excellent image quality Fast, precise and quiet AF Nice handling Great build Constant aperture Weather sealing Super versatile
Cons:
  • Steep price tag Ok bokeh Slightly heavy and long

Rock Star Lens!!!

This is an awesome lens, you can never go wrong with a G series lens from Sony. Perfect match for my Sony a7ii! Only issue, this has to do with Amazon packaging. It arrived today in a big box with just the smaller Sony lens box in it, you should pack these better not to get rattled around.

Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM ( SEL1635GM ) - Review / Test Report

The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM is certainly a good lens but it has a couple of flaws as well. The lens has been optimized for the lower part of the focal length range - which is certainly most important for most buyers anyway.

As sharp as a prime

This super-wide zoom lens is as sharp as a prime at all focal lengths, extremely resistant to flair and doesn't soften when used wide open. The perfect super-wide imaging tool.
