REVIEW: Sony DT 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6
Sony's DT 16-105mm f/4.5-5.6 is a general 'walk about' lens that costs around £480 and covers popular focal lengths equivalent to a 24-157.4mm lens on a full-frame camera. Lenses like this tend to be a popular upgrade for those looking for a little more than their typical 18-55mm kit lens offers in...
Pros:
- Useful zoom range
- Good build quality
- Good centre resolution at the shorter end of the zoom range
Cons:
- Resolution towards edges of the frame from 50mm onwards
- Barrel distortion at 16mm
- Prone to flare

Lens Test: Sony DT 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF
A few years ago a couple of Sony's engineers from their Japan camera division came and spent the day at our test lab to see how we test cameras and lenses. It was at a time when Sony's DSLR market was still in its infancy, having only the Alpha 100 and 900 in its DSLR lineup and a few refurbished...

Great walk around lens
This lens is a good for just about any situation. I used to use the 18-250mm as my walk around lens but since getting this one I've found that for most situations I like this one more. Having the 16mm option is sometimes just enough to keep me from having to reach into my bag for my UWA.
Pros:
- Zoom range
- build
- sharp
- color
Cons:
- Slow (f/3.5-5.6

Best for "always on". Wont miss a shot because of having to change the lens first without compromising image quality.
Pros:
- Very sharp
- incredible quality for zoom range equaling 24-160 on 35mm
Cons:
- Not too fast
- F 3.5 at 16mm only

Sony 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAL-16105 review by hhrhd
I use this lens now nearly for two years. Aprox. 15.000 shots later I am still amazed how good this lens is. The sharpness is only surpassed by some SONY fixed lenses I tried (e.g. the excellent 35mm SAM 1,8).
Pros:
- compact versaitile sharp relaible fast autofocus used with alpha SLT55
Cons:
- creeping

Sony 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 DT ( SAL-16105 ) - Review / Test Report
The build quality is fairly similar to the Zeiss ZA 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 DT (shown to the right in the product image gallery below) - it's decent but nothing to rave about either. The outer shell is made of good quality plastics. The broad, rubberized zoom ring operates smooth but also a little stiff.

A WOW Lens for the price
Overall this lens is my favorite next to the 50mm f/1.4, I take this lens on all my shoots and have used in in most all weather conditions as well as indoor without flash. I find the versatility of this lens remarkable and really the best in class for the price.

Slow Lens
Advertised as f/3.5 - 5.6. At 16 mm focal length, the maximum aperture is f/3.5. However, at 24 mm focal length, it jumps to f/4.5, and at 35 mm focal length, it jumps to f/5, which is disappointingly "slow", This information is not available in the "specifications".
