Sony Alpha A7S Mark III 12.9MP Body Only Digital Camera - Brand New review

A7S Mark III is the latest generation of Sony's video oriented A7S series of cameras. Considering that the previous model, A7S II was released back in 2015, expectations for Mark III were very high, and we believe that it delivered the majority of these expectations.

Gyroscopic Stabilization, Front Dial, Unlimited Video Recording (no 30min limit), Built-in Wireless (Wi-fi), Bluetooth Connectivity, NFC Connectivity, 5-axis Image Stabilization, Articulating Screen, 4K at 120fps and FHD at 240fps Video Recording, No crop on 4K Videos, 10-bit 4:2:2 Color Sampling,...

Sony Alpha A7S Mark III 12.9MP Body Only Digital Camera - Brand New review

Sony hasn’t just improved one or two aspects of its A7S series; with the new A7S III, it’s made an across-the-board set of upgrades that result in a camera that’s the best of its kind.

Class-leading low-light video, New Touch UI, Fully articulating touchscreen, Impressive battery life, No overheating issues

Pricier than predecessor at launch, Low resolution for stills

Sony Alpha A7S Mark III 12.9MP Body Only Digital Camera - Brand New review

Sony’s 12MP full-frame mirrorless model is aimed squarely at videographers, but is packed full of updates that bode well for the A7 line’s future, as Andy Westlake finds out

Sony Alpha A7S Mark III 12.9MP Body Only Digital Camera - Brand New review

Sony kept us waiting five years for the third model in the A7S series, but it certainly doesn’t disappoint. It may stick with the 12 Megapixel resolution of its predecessors to maximise sensitivity, but employs a new sensor with confident phase-detect autofocus and a wealth of movie modes including...

Sony Alpha A7S Mark III 12.9MP Body Only Digital Camera - Brand New review

If we cut to the chase, the Sony Alpha A7S III is, ultimately, designed for videographers. In this area, the A7S III excels, giving video capabilities beyond what most other mirrorless cameras offer. With the exception of the Canon EOS R5.

9.4million dot EVF, Excellent video quality, 4K 120fps video recording, FullHD 240fps video recording, Improved battery life, Improved menu system, Improved touch-screen operation

12mp resolution will not be enough for many stills photographers, Lacks in-camera raw processing, Doesn't record CINE-4K

Sony Alpha A7S Mark III 12.9MP Body Only Digital Camera - Brand New review

We wish the fully articulating monitor was a higher resolution and an APS-C crop option when shooting in 4K. Not much to complain about here. Sony didn’t go with record-breaking features, instead, they built a solid mirrorless camera that is great for video shooters, it would only be better if it...

Sony A7S III Review

The A7S III is a good camera for photographers but an excellent one for video makers. Compact, well-built and thoughtfully designed, it possesses a raft of pro-friendly video capabilities and features that make capturing fantastic footage easier than ever. For demanding videographers, it’s quite possibly the best consumer camera on the market.

Truly superb for video shooters; Excellent low light performance; Vastly improved menu system ;

Limited appeal for stills photographers; No 8K video ;

Sony Alpha A7S Mark III 12.9MP Body Only Digital Camera - Brand New review

Sony a7s III is more of a camcorder than a still camera, and therefore not suitable for all photographers.

Extreme quality 4K video, free of rolling shutter and very low image noise at high ISO. Fast and precise autofocus on both stills and video. Fantastic looking.

Only 4K video. 1.1x cropping in the highest quality, only 12 Mp stills, and Sony's cameras continue to have some ergonomic challenges. High price.

Sony Alpha A7S Mark III 12.9MP Body Only Digital Camera - Brand New review

After the 8K-capabilities of the Canon EOS R5, the Sony A7S III might seem a bit of an anti-climax. I’m sure some videographers were hoping for a big jump in resolution from the 12mp A7S II.

Large pixels for great low-light performance, 4K full-pixel readout without binning and 10-bit depth 4:2:2 colour available in all recording formats, Vari-angle touchscreen and class-leading electronic viewfinder

12Mp seems low resolution for stills, Uses a new memory card format (CFexpress Type A) that's interchangeable with SD
