Back in July of last year, Western Digital launched the first purpose built NAS hard drive, and for the longest time I was waiting for Seagate to do the same. Today this has come to fruition with the NAS HDD, offered in two, three and four TB capacities.

Though it doesn't perform like a standard drive suitable to be paired with an OS for your primary use, but has all the near-enterprise functionality of a NAS good enough for SOHO use. Best part is that its able to keep up with WD Red 2TB version. Not bad for a 4TB counterpart from Seagate!

The arena for NAS-targeted hard drives has just welcomed a second combatant: Seagate's "NAS HDD". Like WD's Red series, NAS HDD is designed to work well with RAID controllers, has improved vibration-reduction, and additional power profiles. Unlike WD's Red, NAS HDD has a 4TB model.

Where is the NAS. This is just a hard disc.

With the NAS HDD series, Seagate now has hard disks that are optimised for use in NAS devices just like the Western Digital Red disks. The fact that they're in TLER mode by default is important for NAS devices, and it's also positive that Seagate tests the disks with all the major NAS devices.

I needed to expand the capacity of my 500GB Buffalo Linkstation NAS and this drive was a perfect choice. We have two of this drives as a backup RAID at my work place and they perform flawless. The drive is quiet, cool and designed for being reliable storage. I also got a great deal on it!

Have had this drive installed in a ShareCentre for over two weeks now, it's blazing fast and so far reliable, and have had no problems at all.
