Seagate my make of choice, bought 4 of these for a NAS and they are very quiet, set up as RAID 5, all drives individually packed to offer very good protection during delivery, would recommend

Got the Seagate NAS 4 tb and I am pleased, seems to work well and is compatable with all NAS based systems. I am a little wary that the product came packaged in a NON-SEALED brown cardboard box like when I install a dozen or so of NAS based drives, and that purchasing in other retails store also...
This disk runs so quiet you don't know it is on. Superb.
The arena for NAS-targeted hard drives has just welcomed a second combatant: Seagate's "NAS HDD". Like WD's Red series, NAS HDD is designed to work well with RAID controllers, has improved vibration-reduction, and additional power profiles. Unlike WD's Red, NAS HDD has a 4TB model.
Fantastic performance for a ~5,900 RPM hard drive; Only 4TB option for NAS-specific models (your move; WD); 3-year warranty
A bit more expensive than WD's Red (2TB and 3TB). Seagate's drives are newer; pricing will go down
I've got a few of them in a custom Linux-based NAS built in a Norco 4220 case, mixed with many other drives of varying capacity and speed. They run cool and perform consistently.
Lots of capacity Is happy running in a dense install with many other drives
Poor random IO performance - its not designed for that usage
good product and chip rate
Great product as always from Seagate. Excellent price and come with 5 years warranty. If you register with Seagate you can get data recovery service for 14 bucks if anything ever happens to your drive no matter what.
The Seagate NAS HDD is a 3.5" form factor, 6Gb/s SATA interface hard drive that spins at 5,900RPM, ranges up to 4TB in capacity and is specifically engineered to be installed in one to five-bay NAS devices.
Higher mixed workload and sequential throughput than WD Red; Greatest capacity in NAS HDD segment; Better latency consistency in mixed workloads than WD Red
Back of the group random 4k max latency in write activity
Though it doesn't perform like a standard drive suitable to be paired with an OS for your primary use, but has all the near-enterprise functionality of a NAS good enough for SOHO use. Best part is that its able to keep up with WD Red 2TB version. Not bad for a 4TB counterpart from Seagate!
When QNAP sent over the TS-559 Pro+ to us for review in September 2010, I decided it was a wise choice to buy a new set of hard drives to go along with the NAS. My requirements were simple; I wanted something reasonably power efficient, reasonably fast, and reasonably priced to run in RAID 5.
