Samsung TL500
For a first entry into enthusiast compact territory, Samsung puts in a credible showing with its TL500, an attractive camera with a thoughtful design, fast f1.8 lens, and flip-and-twist AMOLED display. But it faces some steep competition and ultimately can't keep up with the crowd.
Pros:
- The Samsung TL500 has an attractive design and a bright flip-and-twist display
Cons:
- Some irritating control placements
- inconsistent photo quality
- and an uninspiring feature set tarnish the TL500's appeal

If the market for enthusiast cameras was reduced by the falling prices of DSLRs, it now faces being squeezed further by the mirrorless cameras that offer DSLR-level image quality with less of a size penalty.

- Unpredictable metering requires regular use of exposure compensation
- No control over noise reduction (which is excessive at high ISO settings
- Video limited to VGA resolution
- Rear dial difficult to move with precision...

Samsung EX1 Digital Camera Review
On the whole, the EX1 is a good quality camera that will find its particular niche in the market given that it is unlikely to suit all tastes - and nor has it been designed with blanket appeal in mind.

- Good image quality
- Low noise levels to ISO 800
- Intuitive controls
Cons:
- No HD video
- Costly
- No quick access to EV compensation

Samsung EX1
Samsung's EX1 is a very good camera that enthusiasts will love. It's got an excellent lens and the articulated screen is useful, but it doesn't quite do enough to beat the cheaper LX3.

Another of those fashionable SLD (single lens, direct view) cameras? Not quite. The EX1 still qualifies as a compact camera, lacking interchangeable lenses and sporting a small 1/1.7in CCD image sensor. Nonetheless its design and features borrow heavily from the new genre.

Samsung EX1 review
While compact interchangeable lens cameras are becoming more and more common, they're still not small enough for some people. Canon's PowerShot G series has long been considered the enthusiasts' choice when it comes to compact cameras, but that changed in 2008 when Panasonic introduced the Lumix...
