Samsung 840 EVO (500GB) Review
The Samsung 840 EVO (500GB) ($259) internal solid-state drive (SSD), the follow-up to the company's Samsung 840 Series 250GB($378.89 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), retains the TLC flash memory that debuted in its predecessor, but adds functionality to boost performance. The result is one of the best SSDs we've ever seen, with a dynamite price/performance ratio. Appropriately, the "EVO" suffix stands for "evolution"—this is the second drive to use triple-level-cell (TLC) NAND and it includes a write-performance-boosting feature that addresses one of the principle complaints regarding the flash memory type.
Samsung is one of a handful of companies using TLC NAND; most drives today use multi-level-cell (MLC) flash memory. The difference between the two is the number of bits that are stored in each memory cell. Traditional MLC stores two bits; TLC flash, as the name implies, stores three.
The shift to TLC NAND has been slow, despite the additional storage it offers. TLC NAND is ...
