The OnePlus 8T is a good upgrade for all OnePlus users who are on phones that came before the OnePlus 7. In fact, I won’t be surprised if OnePlus 8 buyers feel a bit shortchanged after this one because it is, by all means, a better phone, coming just months after they got theirs.

The 120Hz screen is the headline of the OnePlus 8T, which is an otherwise relatively safe revision of the original OnePlus 8.

No telephoto lens

Already have a OnePlus 8? There’s no need to upgrade to the OnePlus 8T. It’s a similar phone. The back has been fiddled with a little, the macro camera is less useless than it was, and the B&W takes on the job of “redundant camera sensor” position that seems to be mandatory in every mid-price phone if 2020. OnePlus’s jump to a 120Hz screen is only half welcome. It looks great in action but we’re not too pleased by how battery-hungry it is, based on real-world testing. That added gloss isn’t always worth the cost for those who use their phone a lot and need it to actually last ’til midnight. OnePlus has lost most of the value mojo had back in its early years. If that’s what you want, you’ll find some of it in cheaper phones from Realme and Xiaomi Poco. Still, if only a top-tier processor and fancy glass back design will hit the spot, the OnePlus 8T is still a great buy.

But the OnePlus 8T carries a $749 Pro-level asking price, a steep increase versus the $599 7T and the $549 6T. That makes it no longer a "flagship killer" but a true flagship that needs to go directly up against Apple's and Samsung's similarly priced phones. The OnePlus 8T offers small improvements compared to its already very good predecessor. For example, it offers a display with a 120-Hz refresh rate, a macro camera with a higher resolution and an additional lens that provides more data for photos.

OnePlus 8T is a compromise. Therefore, one should keep the tongue straight in the mouth if one is considering a purchase. For most, the OnePlus 8T will be among the best mobile phones on the market, while consumers with specific needs should look for something else.

Lightning fast charging and long battery life despite bright screen with 120 Hz refresh rate. Among the fastest mobiles for the price, and the camera takes good pictures in wide format as well as in the dark, or when you get really close to your subject.

Missing wireless charging and IP certification. Miserable front camera and the primary camera lacks optical zoom. Too many Google apps degrade OxygenOS.

OnePlus’ latest phone is basically the OnePlus 8 Pro’s top-notch screen refresh rate and battery stuffed into a smaller body. Then there’s the awesome 39-minute fast charging tech, to sweeten the deal. The OnePlus 8T is only marred by subpar cameras and a less unique design.
