HMD Global is not only the champion when it comes to timely software updates , but also when it comes to updating its own smartphone series. At the IFA in Berlin this week, the Finnish manufacturer is giving two of its strong mid-range smartphones a hardware update.

Hands on: Nokia 7.2
My favourite Nokia phone to come out of the recent HMD Global licensing deal was the Nokia 7 Plus. This wasn't the flashiest nor the most specced-out, but it focused on the basics and kept the price affordable. That's exactly what the Nokia 7.2 (or Nokia 7 2019) does.

Nokia 7.2
The Nokia 7.2 is a solid step up from the Nokia 7.1 in a variety of ways, but it's unlikely to make you a Nokia fan if you weren't already, and there are other smartphones at the same price that are perhaps a little more interesting.
Pros:
- Low price tag
- Powerful 48MP camera
- Fairly good looking device
Cons:
- Google Assistant button is inconvenient
- Video recording quality is poor
- Camera bump is rather thick

- Software The Nokia 7.2 has a stock Android One software experience
- just like all other Nokia devices
- Battery Most people should be able to get two days of use on a single charge
- Design The large screen is nice
- and the plastic shell makes the Nokia 7.2 very lightweight
Cons:
- Design (again There are some backlight issues on the top of the panel
- Camera Most photos come out over-saturated
- Price The Nokia 7.2 is only $50 less than the Google Pixel 3a
- which has (mostly) better internal hardware
- faster updates
- and a better camera

Nokia 7.2 review: Nokia's mid-range headliner
Though I sang its praises at the unveiling, my time with the Nokia 7.2 has changed my mind. It's now abundantly clear that the offering is a bit of a mixed bag. It excels in many areas, including design, performance and display quality.
Pros:
- Swish design
- Outperforms other £300 phones
- Decent array of cameras for the price
Cons:
- Poor battery life
- 48MP shooting mode isn't great

Cons:
- Processor shows its limits during some games
- LCD screen has poor viewing angles
- Photo quality falls well below the Pixel 3A
- Cellular connectivity limited to GSM carriers
