Micro Nikkor AF-S DX 40mm f/2.8 G - Review / Test Report

The Micro-Nikkor AF-S DX 40mm f/2.8 G is a very nice addition to Nikon's line-up of dedicated DX lenses. Image sharpness is excellent in the image center wide open already, the borders and corners show very good resolution, too, when slightly stopped down.

Up Close and Personal

Nikon has brought the macro lens goodness (btw: Nikon calls macro, Micro) for DX-format shooters with the new, portable Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G ($279) . For less than $300, this lens is a steal and a must-have for anyone within the Nikon D40 to D7000 range.

Great Macro Lens

Great macro lense. I use it on a Nikon D7000. It performs at a premium level and for the price you can't beat it. This lens also has metal mounting, instead of plastic, so it's very durable when compared to the average kit lens that comes with most DSLR's.
Pros:
  • Price and performance
Cons:
  • Doesn't have image stabilization

Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G

It's an excellent piece of glass, no doubt. I've just bought it through flipkart and shoot some pictures. It's sharpness on all apertures are unique. My macro shots are also stunning. This lens is really versatile and great for it's price. And this is the sharpest among cheaper Nikkor lenses.

Nikon 40MM F2.8G Macro Lens JAA638DA review

Small, economical and excellent performance - there's a lot to like here. Nikon markets this lens as an introduction to macro photography, and I think they've done very well here to make that happen.

Robb

Do yourself a favor and find an older AF-D in the 100-200mm range if you want a true macro lens.
Pros:
  • Its Nikon glass so it is quality and it will AF on all camera's including the lower end models like the D40
  • Small, lightweight and portable
  • Good for someone who want's a normal lens comparable to the 35mm for regular shooting, and may have the need to shoot a quick flower or product like jewelery...
Cons:
  • Its focal length is its greatest weakness
  • No macro hobbyist would ever use anything under 100mm
  • Lenses like this force you to get really close which: A: Puts you in your own shadow
  • B: Scares insects away
  • C: Forces you to use a ring flash or off shoe.

high value for little money: compact, light-weight, my normal prime on a DX camera with the additional marco feature

  • very sharp in the image center
  • borders and corners show very good resolution and no relevant vignetting when slightly stopped down
Cons:
  • wide open some vignetting and in the corners not as sharp as in the center

"Better than the ""nifty-fifty"""

"Got this lens from Oakville location. This is my second best purchase next to the D7000. This lens isn't just an amazing macro lens but also an excellent portrait lens. Super sharp, vivid and crisp images. I also have a 50mm f1.8 D and a 17-50 fast lens but I like using this lens better.
