Having used the old 24-120AF and two samples of the 24-120 ED VR with variable aparture, I was more than excited when Nikon announced this new optical instrument. It it superior to its predecessors in every aspect.

So as I eluded to in build quality some seem to be perfect in function and some seem to have issues. I have had two of these and a short search on the internet will confirm what I found to be true. The first one did not seem to focus well and seemed to have a catch in the zoom mechanism.

Nikon's produced a nice kit lens for full-frame bodies, though it's not without its caveats. The lens fared quite well in our tests, for the most part - the big problem is the wide open performance at 70 and 85mm, where it's quite soft indeed when used at ƒ/4.

Wedding, event, travel, portrait and landscape photographers in need of a do-everything-well, all-purpose zoom lens that can fit in the palm of your hand should run to their nearest Nikon dealer and gobble up the new AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR.

This is a very sharp lens and it is a natural fit for my D700. I have owned the 24-120 F3.5-5.6 VR version of this lens for several years and never understood why it got such negative reviews, it is a very good lens also.
