Nikon AF Zoom Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF Lens Review

Nikon AF Zoom Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF was first released in early 2000 to compliment the growing range of Nikon's arsenal of standard zoom lenses. Nikon followed up with an updated version of this lens circa 2003, however, Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF ED was very short-lived - by...

Nikon 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF AF Nikkor review by lightknight

this is a very underestimated zoom which is capable of great image quality from about F5.6 onwards. Its slightly weak at 85mm. I have primes for 85, 50, and 28 mm but this lens loses little to these up to around F11.
Pros:
  • good range
  • FX compatible
  • fast at wide angle
  • fast focussing
  • sharp
Cons:
  • very short focus range so hard to focus manually
  • slightly too much plastic

Nikon 24-85mm f/2.8-4D AF Lens

While I hope to create a full Nikon 24-85mm f/2.8-4D AF Lens, my first priority is to include results from this lens in the lens comparison tools available on the site. This page currently exists because it is required by the database and content management systems for me to post information and...

Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4 D IF - Review / Test Report

The Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF is an very good standard zoom and it was the right decision by Nikon to discontinue its younger cousin (AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED) rather than this lens.

I use this lens on my 35mm body as well as my digital camera (not Nikon). The fixed front element is great, especially with polarising filter. Edge to edge sharpness is great. This is my favourite lens.

Flexibility for lighter cameras

"I purchased this for off camera flash work. It works great with a canon flash which weighs a little over a pound. The quick release tab helps reduce the hassle of setting up, and the tripod is capable of holding the flash securely.

Great all around lens.

Been using this lens for many years. All the way back to my N70 film camera. Fast lens with decent zoom. Wish it would zoom a bit more than the 85mm. I bought this over the 24-120mm since it was faster and back in the film days you needed the extra speed for lower light conditions.
