I Was Given This Lens With A D50
This lens is very awesome in its capabilities. Mine came with a Nikon D50 someone gave to me for free. It made the D50 a powerhouse in every type of photo I could take with it. I have no intentions of getting rid of this lens!

Fast f/2.8 maximum aperture at 24m setting is ideal for available light shooting or Slow/Rear flash sync techniques

MOST DISAPPOINTED - VERY VERY POOR
How can a £600 Nikon lens be sold without a lens cap to protect the lens I have been a photographer for almost 40 years and every lens and camera I have every bought has a lens cap! MOST DISAPPOINTED - VERY VERY POOR.

I can't say enough great things about it
This lens is everything it has been claimed to be, including HEAVY! The HEAVY, I will deal with as it also provides stability. I can't say enough great things about it, and really look forward to using it for the rest of my life.

Nikon 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF AF Nikkor
I got this lens because it's faster than most kit zooms, but not huge like the 24-70, it's compatible with my film body, and it has a decent 1:2 macro ability. It's capable of great shots, but it's pretty disappointing wide open.
Pros:
- Relatively fast
- solid build
- aperture ring
- excellent Macro capability
Cons:
- Very soft wide open
- no VR
- quite hefty

- Nice Bokeh
- Rugged
- Strong Construction

Great all around lens.
Been using this lens for many years. All the way back to my N70 film camera. Fast lens with decent zoom. Wish it would zoom a bit more than the 85mm. I bought this over the 24-120mm since it was faster and back in the film days you needed the extra speed for lower light conditions.

Definitely worth the extra cost vs. the kit lens
If you're going to buy the D600 or any other Nikon FX DSLR camera, purchase the body only and spend a few extra dollars to buy this lens (skip paying for the kit lens). You'll gain an extra stop+ of light overall and macro capabilities are built-in.
Pros:
- f/2.8 widest aperature
- sharp
- lightweight
- macro capabilities
Cons:
- some vignetting in the corners when used wide open
- no VR

Good performance at a great price!
I recently took the lens to our vacation in Alaska. I took over 600 pictures with this lens in a wide range of lighting and weather conditions. The lens performed admirably. Sharpness was consistently good and I experienced no problems with vignetting.
