Nikon Nikkor AF 24-85mm lens a great lens
I own a number of Nikon lens sets as I am a photographer. I use them on the D80's and a few D70's.
Pros:
- Super sharp images
Cons:
- Middle of the road pricey...good choice for advanced amateur or pro

Nikon 24-85D F2.8-4.0 lens
This is probably the most underated lens in the Nikon range. In terms of focus it is far superior to the 24-120 and it produces pin sharp images from edge to edge. It is also fast, offers a good macro facilty, and is portable.

Quite the best Nikon lens in this range, I have used and at that price an absolute steal. I have a very sharp copy with no front or rear focussing issues and sharp at the 24mm (f2.8) end though slightly less so at the 85mm end. Very well built and nicely balanced on my D80.
Pros:
- F2.8 is effective
- great for portraits
- no silent wave focussing but no slouch either
- Can be used confidently in a whole host of situations especially relatively low light despite not having VR
Cons:
- I believe there is some inconsistency in the quality from lens to lens
- Not really a true landscape lens on a cropped sensor camera

This was a great find!
I mainly use this lens for portraiture and closeups. Pros: * The focus is very fast, which makes me cheer compared to the relatively slow 55-200mm. * The bokeh is decent, but after getting used to my f/1.8 on the 35mm prime it can be a bit underwhelming.
Pros:
- Consistent Output
- Durable
- Easily Interchangeable
- Fast / accurate auto-focus
- Nice Bokeh
- Rugged
- Strong Construction
Cons:
- Heavy
- Tough To Attach

Good performance at a great price!
I recently took the lens to our vacation in Alaska. I took over 600 pictures with this lens in a wide range of lighting and weather conditions. The lens performed admirably. Sharpness was consistently good and I experienced no problems with vignetting.

Definitely worth the extra cost vs. the kit lens
If you're going to buy the D600 or any other Nikon FX DSLR camera, purchase the body only and spend a few extra dollars to buy this lens (skip paying for the kit lens). You'll gain an extra stop+ of light overall and macro capabilities are built-in.
Pros:
- f/2.8 widest aperature
- sharp
- lightweight
- macro capabilities
Cons:
- some vignetting in the corners when used wide open
- no VR

I bought this lens specifically for a "space-limited" extended trip I went on. A few times I wished it had a little longer upper end, but overall it did what it was supposed to. It has a good wide-angle for scenics, and the short telephoto worked well for people shots.
Pros:
- nice zoom range for everyday lens
- fast enough to be useful
- closeup mode (macro
