Moto X4 review: This is what a world without MotoMods looks like
Though its perfectly servicable for the most part, the Moto X4 is defined more by the things that are absent from its feature-set rather than those that are present. The target audience for the Moto X4 is a bit of a weird one, given the brand’s recent pivot towards MotoMods. At a certain price-point, modern Motorola handsets make this jump from being just “another Android smartphone" to being a modular one. Where LG and Google flirted with the idea of bringing a modular smartphone to market, Motorola have made it their crowning glory.
Pros:
- Shiny without the usual drawbacks
- Versatile camera
Cons:
- Lack of MotoMods
- Performance falls short

Moto X4 review
We’re pleased to see that Motorola has revived the Moto X. For the most part, we like the new glass design and the specs and features are good for the £350 price - it looks like a more expensive phone. Waterproofing and the dual-lens camera sets this apart from rivals, and we like the 5.2in screen size for comfort and practicality. It's slower than the Honor 9, and has half the storage as standard, but if you'd prefer the water-resistance over the extra speed, the Moto X4 is a great choice for anyone that can’t afford the hefty price tags of the current flagships.

Motorola Moto X4 Review
The Motorola Moto X4 phone combines midrange specs with a solid design, dual rear cameras, and built-in support for Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. The Moto X4 is Motorola's fusion phone. Priced at $399.99 unlocked or $329.99 subsidized by Amazon ads, it combines aspects from both ends of its lineup, like dual rear camera sensors and a waterproof design from the high-end Z2 Force, with the midrange specs of the more affordable G5 Plus. It doesn't support Moto Mods, but has the almost-stock Android software Motorola is known for, as well as integration with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. Its status is bolstered by a strong battery and solid dual-camera system. Shoppers after premium features on a more modest budget will appreciate the X4, our Editors' Choice in the midrange price bracket. Design, Features, And Display The Moto X4 catches the eye. Its back panel is designed to reflect light in different patterns based on angle and lighting conditions. It's quite fetching in both Super Black and Sterling Blue options, though I noticed it picks up fingerprints and smudges rather easily and it's very, very slippery. ...
Pros:
- Attractive, waterproof design
- Solid specs
- Dual-sensor camera setup
- Great battery life
- Amazon Alexa enabled
- Comprehensive network banding
Cons:
- Picks up smudges easily

Motorola Moto X4 review
The Moto X4 is a one of those phones that gets you high-end style at a reasonable price. It’s not just about the look either, with extra features like useful dual rear cameras, a great screen, a good amount of storage and a smart fingerprint scanner. It has a few issues, though, enough to stop it from reaching quite the heights of the Honor 9, which is only £30 more and comes with 64GB storage and a higher-end CPU. The processor here is not much better than that of the Moto G5S Plus and the camera is surprisingly slow. Just keep in mind that a software update could speed the camera up, which would make it much more of a pleasure to use all-round.
Pros:
- Very smart metal and glass build
- Neat bonus wide angle rear camera
- Water resistant
- Punchy screen
Cons:
- Slow camera
- CPU roughly matched by cheaper phones
