Can HTC shrink its best phone without losing the essence of its greatness?

My encounter with the HTC One mini underlines the increasing irrelevance of specs to the smartphone user experience. HTC managed to chop the One's processing credentials in half without introducing any tangible performance shortcomings.

Best display at this size; Performs as well as the higher-spec One; High build quality

Poor camera results; Limited battery life; Sense is still a burden rather than a boon

HTC One M8: One direction

The Android scene is a crowded one with new devices in various shapes and sizes flooding the market everyday. It's not easy for one model to stand out but HTC's One M8 comes close.

Solid, premium build; loud and clear BoomSound speakers; amazing front camera

A little overweight; main camera is only 4-megapixels; heats up easily

HTC One (M8)....at last

This product was out of stock for quite a while but was swiftly processed by my local Argos store in North Bridge, Edinburgh. So far it has exceeded my expectations. I ordered the DOT Case separately and it was easy to set up and use. There is a case in the box but it does not protect the screen.

"Great phone but I had to return it because 16gb is too little storage. What a shame because apart from the tiny storage that matches phones from 5 years ago this was a great phone.

HTC One mini Review: In Depth

The HTC One mini certainly looks the part, but does it deliver? Absolutely. It's not perfect, but this more pocketable take on the HTC One is a joy to use and offers users a rich smartphone experience that its rivals may find hard to beat.

Beautiful; premium design; Rich multimedia experience; BoomSound/Beats audio is excellent

Camera lacks fine detail; No IR blaster or NFC; Expensive at launch

Besides not able to send/receive MMS. Phone still works great after 2.5 years

I bought this phone in July 2014 as a birthday present for my husband. He is not an extreme smartphone user just some basic internet and call/texting. The phone itself is still working without any problems.

It may be the "mini" but it's as advanced as they come.

HTC One mini review

The HTC One was a landmark handset, pretty much the best that HTC could produce at the time. But it's quite a handful, and it made sense to shrink it down a little for those who value comfort and usability over bleeding edge tech.

Gorgeous good looks and lightweight design; decent screen; fast processor; latest version of Android

No expandable storage; no removable battery; camera could be better

HTC One Mini review

The original HTC One launched earlier this year, and its custom Ultrapixel camera technology and well-designed aluminium chassis proved a hit with technophiles. Now, a few months on HTC's chosen to try and build on the One's success releasing a shrunk-down, slightly cheaper version of its flagship...

Good screen; decent build quality; good camera; mid-range price tag

Average battery life; no NFC support
