HTC One M9 review: One up

One of the hottest bodies in business just got hotter, in time for next season. Touched-up and brushed-down, the HTC One M9 arrives spot on time third year in a row, looking like a celebrity and acting like a pro.
Pros:
  • 5" 1080p capacitive touchscreen with 441pi
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 4, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset with dual quad-core processor: 2 GHz quad-core Cortex-A57 plus 1.5 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 430 GPU, 3GB of RAM, Android 5.0 Lollipop with HTC Sense 7 UI, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac...
Cons:
  • Screen has the same specs three years in a row
  • Non-removable battery
  • No water and dust protection
  • Camera lacks OIS or digital video stabilization
  • Not particularly slim or compact

Everyone loves an underdog. They're new, exciting, and upset expectations. In 2013, the HTC One M7 brought that incredible disruptive energy to smartphones, and the following year's M8 ran neck and neck with the best you could buy.

HTC One M9 review

HTC has somehow improved the amazing Boom Sound speakers. This time the dual, front-facing speakers include Dolby Audio, which help create a rich, crisp, spacious soundscape. Small issues aside, it's still early days yet for 2015, but HTC has managed to make one of our favourite smartphones, again.
Pros:
  • Camera captures detailed images
  • Well built and scratch resistant coating works
  • User Interface is snappy and responsive
Cons:
  • Water and dust proofing would be nice

HTC One M9 review

For years mobile phones were piece of plastic. Some looked good, but still had that cheap feeling of thin plastic. Long time smartphone manufacturers helped change this with the introduction of its HTC One M7 flagship device a couple of years ago and improved on that with its HTC One M8 last year.

HTC knows that when you're on a good thing – you stick to it. That was obviously the thinking behind its latest flagship smartphone – the One M9 – because it looks almost identical to last year's popular model.

HTC One M9 Review: A Step Backwards

It's not a good sign when your lead designer quits days before the launch of your flagship phone. Apart from some innovative software features, there's little to recommend the HTC One M9 over any competing device.
Pros:
  • Excellent speakers
  • Nifty personalization features
  • Uh Oh insurance will replace damaged phone
Cons:
  • Sharp edges
  • Short battery life
  • Poor viewing angles

HTC One M9 deep-dive review: Third time's (almost) the charm

  • solid performance
  • useful software features like Easy Mode and native theming

HTC has been a bit of a fan favourite with both Australian carriers and the buying public. Their phones have consistently been available through mainstream channels for a long time, and for the most part have sold relatively well.
Pros:
  • Beautiful Design
  • Fantastic Sound
  • SD Card expansion
  • OS is buttery smooth
  • It's GORGEOUS – I mean look at it
Cons:
  • Camera could be better
  • Weird occasional lockups
  • Still a little slippery to hold

HTC One M9

Expectation. It is a word that underpins any flagship smartphone release, and when HTC informed the world that it would be unveiling its follow up to the immensely impressive One (M8) (review) at MWC 2015 in March, expectations were naturally high.
Pros:
  • Well constructed with beautiful design
  • Powerful processing and multitasking
Cons:
  • Heats up under heavy use
  • Doesn't feel like enough of a step forward
