HTC One M9 Review: A Step Backwards
It's not a good sign when your lead designer quits days before the launch of your flagship phone. Apart from some innovative software features, there's little to recommend the HTC One M9 over any competing device.
Pros:
- Excellent speakers
- Nifty personalization features
- Uh Oh insurance will replace damaged phone
Cons:
- Sharp edges
- Short battery life
- Poor viewing angles

HTC's One M9 sells itself as a premium luxury device, but the reality in day to day use is disappointing. Over at the ABC's Technology+Games portal, I've written up my experience with the HTC One M9, a phone that should have been an instant classic, but falls just a bit short. So go and read it now!

HTC One M9 deep-dive review: Third time's (almost) the charm
With years of refinement, HTC has managed to create one of the world's most beautifully designed and well-built smartphones. The One M9 is truly a luxurious object, and its exceptional form alone is enough to make it worth considering.
Pros:
- Outstanding build quality and hardware design
- excellent display
- best-in-class front-facing stereo speakers
- solid performance
- useful software features like Easy Mode and native theming
- supports Quick Charge for accelerated charging
- SD card slot
- two years of upgraded Google Drive storage
- free...
Cons:
- Mediocre camera quality
- unexceptional battery life
- awkward power and volume button placement
- user interface a bit stale compared to Google's base Android Lollipop OS
- no wireless charging
- Quick Charge adapter not included with phone

HTC has been a bit of a fan favourite with both Australian carriers and the buying public. Their phones have consistently been available through mainstream channels for a long time, and for the most part have sold relatively well.
Pros:
- Beautiful Design
- Fantastic Sound
- SD Card expansion
- OS is buttery smooth
- It's GORGEOUS – I mean look at it
Cons:
- Camera could be better
- Weird occasional lockups
- Still a little slippery to hold

HTC One M9
Expectation. It is a word that underpins any flagship smartphone release, and when HTC informed the world that it would be unveiling its follow up to the immensely impressive One (M8) (review) at MWC 2015 in March, expectations were naturally high.
Pros:
- Well constructed with beautiful design
- Powerful processing and multitasking
Cons:
- Heats up under heavy use
- Doesn't feel like enough of a step forward

Build Quality The HTC One M9 is a handsome smartphone. Ergonomic and light in hand. Its body is elegant and solid -- I wouldn't call it rugged per se, but it easily survived a few drops without a dent, ding or scratch.
Pros:
- Terrific Dual Camera User Interface
- Manual mode
- image capture
- Video shooting easy to engage
- Outstanding editing suite
- Full 1080p 5.0 Touchscreen is bright and clear
- 4K and 1080p HD video options
- Best external smartphone speakers available now
- Terrific call quality
- Good to Excellent Battery...
Cons:
- Auto Focus not always accurate
- Auto Exposure less accurate in high contrast shooting conditions
- Noisy Images in all but bright lighting
- Digital Zoom noise
- tends to overexpose
- No optical IS
- No optical zoom
- Continuous AF in video capture slow and distracting

The HTC One M9 is a fantastic phone, let down by its camera and less-than-stellar battery life. By Duncan McLeod. HTC's One M8, the Taiwanese company's flagship phone for 2014, was - and still is - is a great smartphone.

HTC One M9 Review: It's What's Inside that Counts
The HTC One M9 features more significant changes on the inside than its slight external tweaks suggest. It would be a shame if the stagnant design causes potential buyers to look elsewhere, because the HTC One M9's display, software, and chipset make it one of the best Android smartphones currently...
