HTC 8X camera review
The HTC 8X offers solid but not outstanding image quality in a well-built and compact package that feels nice in the hand. However, the camera UI is focused on simplicity and can feel slightly cumbersome to those who like to change their camera settings frequently. With no built-in HDR, burst or panorama modes the HTC 8X's feature set looks a little limited next to the top-end Android and iOS competition, but the device is definitely worth a closer look for mobile photographers who are invested in the Windows Phone OS.
Pros:
- Good ergonomics and simple operation
- Dedicated two-stage shutter button with good tactility
- Very good, bright screen
- Good quality HD video capture in good light
- Manual control over ISO and a range of other parameters
Cons:
- General image quality lags the best
- AF speed not class leading
- Some clunkiness in camera app interface
- Face recognition not 100% reliable
- Lacks integration of some features that are becoming standard (HDR, panorama, burst)
- More than average corner softness
- Video AF hunts in low light

HTC Windows Phone 8X
The Windows Phone 8X by HTC is one of the most attractive smartphones we've reviewed this year. It offers excellent performance thanks to the slick Windows Phone OS and has a great display. However, the 8X is let down by a lack of expandable memory, some odd design ergonomics and the Windows Phone third-party app ecosystem. Nokia's Lumia 920 may be the Windows Phone everyone is waiting for but HTC clearly has other ideas. The company has partnered with Microsoft to promote its new 8X as a "signature Windows Phone". The Windows Phone 8X by HTC is a polycarbonate slab that offers excellent performance and features one of the most attractive physical designs on the market. However, the 8X is let down by a lack of expandable memory, has some odd design ergonomics and the Windows Phone third-party app ecosystem can't match rival platforms.
Pros:
- Fresh and attractive design
- Excellent screen
- Slick and fast performance
Cons:
- Limited internal memory & no card slot
- Poor ergonomics due to long shape
- Limited Windows Phone app ecosystem
