Google Pixel 4 XL review: Same pros as the Pixel 4... and same cons, too

Update, Aug. 7, 2020: Google has discontinued the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL phones. This follows the launch of the Pixel 4A, which we have reviewed. Original story follows.

There's no denying the Pixel 4 XL has one of the best cameras around, but its shortcomings don't justify its high price. Instead, consider the Note 10 or the OnePlus 7T. The Pixel 3 XL is another great candidate and is discounted at $600 now.

The Pixel 4 XL has a big screen that refreshes 90 times a second, so everything looks real smooth; It also takes outstanding photos, and its face unlock is the fastest we've seen.

The phone is expensive; doesn't come with earbuds and has no expandable storage option.

Google Pixel 4 XL review

There will be a time when the Google Pixel 4 XL might be a great phone, but that time isn’t now. I love the design, the feel, the 90Hz screen and incredible camera. The new on-device natural language understanding is a marvel.

Pros: amazing on-device natural language processing, next-generation Google Assistant, brilliant camera, Face Unlock, Google Recorder app, Android 10 + fast updates, 90Hz screen.

Cons: poor third-party app support for Face Unlock, Face Unlock needs eyes-open fix, Google Assistant needs G Suite fix, below-average battery life, no fingerprint scanner option.

Google Pixel 4 XL review

We're struggling to summarise our thoughts on the Pixel 4 and 4 XL. On one hand, they're brilliant smartphones, but on the other, we have so many gripes; the fingerprint sensor is gone, Motion Sense is gimmicky and battery life remains middling at best.

Cameras are excellent, playful design, 90Hz screen is great, slick performance and Android 10 software.

Battery live is middling at best, no fingerprint sensor, Motion Sense is gimmicky at present, the top bezel.

Google Pixel 4 XL review

The larger Pixel smartphone. Google offers the Pixel 4 also in an XL version, whose size allows for a more powerful battery. Not only is the battery capacity sufficient to run the larger display, but it also improves on the overall endurance of the smartphone.

IP68 certification, very good camera performance, long-lasting guarantee of updates, 90-Hz display

no Wi-Fi 6, no storage expansion

Google Pixel 4 XL review

The Google Pixel 4 duo was not Google's best-kept secret. We saw pictures of the phone weeks before the event, and we even learned about Face unlock while Google teased the Motion Sense features ahead of its event.

Gorgeous, color-accurate display., Unique textured design., Quick and reliable Face unlock., Great camera performance.

Google Pixel 4 XL review

For the past few years, I've looked forward to Google announcing its latest Pixel phone. I've enjoyed and easily recommended every Pixel phone Google has released. It's been one of my favorite devices released every year, and even with months of leaks that revealed nearly everything there is to know...

Impressive camera, Pure Android with regular updates, Wider carrier availability

Poor battery life, 64GB of base storage, $899 starting price point

Google Pixel 4 XL review

Last year I told you about a Pixel 5 and if the advertising is correct the Pixel 6 is available so why should I now get the look at the Pixel4XL. On the face of it a phone launched at least two years ago would be well past its sell by date.

Google Pixel 4 XL review

Google’s Pixel 4 XL Android smartphone was released late in October. There were quite a few reviews that came quickly, unfortunately, we had a few issues with our review unit. The biggest issue we had was that the device wouldn’t update to the November update.
