Google Chromecast Review

Google wowed us with the Chromecast when it launched two years ago. At the time, the idea of a $35 device you could plug into your HDTV to watch streaming media was remarkable. It no longer seems as novel, with other inexpensive solutions on the market, even still the Chromecast remains a top-notch media streamer. And now it gets a refresh. The newly released Chromecast is slightly different in design, and a bit faster in operation, but it keeps the same $35 price tag and mobile device control scheme that made the original so popular. Don't rush out to buy one if you already own the original Chromecast, but as a new iteration it's every bit as strong an option, and earns our Editors' Choice for media streamers. New DesignA small plastic puck with a glossy, colorful front side (it's available in black, pink, or yellow versions), the new Chomecast has a matte gray bottom side. A short, flat cable comes out of one end and terminates in an HDMI connector. A micro USB port sits oppos...

The new Google Chromecast doesn't make any big changes from the original media streamer, but it's a bit quicker and every bit as handy, for the same very reasonable $35.

Inexpensive; Easy to set up; Compatible with many apps and services; Responsive

No major new features over the original Chromecast; Requires a smartphone, tablet, or PC to control

Google Chromecast with Google TV review: Welcome to the party, Google

It was previously hard to recommend getting a Chromecast for TV, but this product - thanks to its remote control and user interface - is a much more complete offering. There are some absences to services - Apple TV+ an obvious one - but the platform feels strong already and like it will develop into something rock solid. Google might be late to the party, but it has finally arrived - and in style.

Great remote; Google Assistant integration for great search; 4K HDR support; Dolby Atmos; Great performance; New UI makes life easier; TV/Sound system control;

Some services missing - no Apple TV+ or All 4; Recommendations need development; Only supports one top level user account; No Stadia support;

Significantly better than the older version

Being able to to choose the resolutions for playing back videos, is my favourite feature of the new Google Chromecast. I also really like it's remote control. I don't really have to use my phone and switch between apps anymore. There are couple of really useful settings which are unfortunately burried under tons of unnecessary settings, such as controlling of video suggestions. I read some reviews complaining about video suggestions. The options are there to switch off receiving video suggestions from particular video streaming services, it is just hard to find it out like some other useful settings. But, it's a good product, it's not expensive and I think most people will enjoy of using it.

Great but not perfect

I love the new interface the Google TV introduces. This is a simple easy to use device that is a huge step up from the last generation. I have given it 4 stars because of the issues streaming 4k content despite having high speed internet connection and Google wifi. Pros: - Clean easy to use interface - Can connect to most streaming services - Comes with remote that can take the place of TV and soundbar remotes - Streamline all your services to one place - Makes any TV with HDMI smart - Appropriate for people who aren't tech savy Cons: - Has trouble keeping a strong connection to google wifi less than a meter away - Can not stream 4k despite home having 100mbps internet connection - Pushes own paid streaming service

Simple and brilliant

Bought this on the weekend to replace another brand of set top box which was garbage. This is great.... Connected up OK and once it was set up, Is surprisingly fast. The ui is simple and intuitive. Works with all the FTA streaming services so well I have disconnected The aerial. It was a lot cheaper than buying a new TV just for the spare room, So I'm very happy with that. I don't care about 4k content so no comment on that front. My 10yo plasma TV is now smarter than my 2018 smart TV!

All new model

Very happy with this purchase. Once set up the remote controls my Yamaha amp for the power and volume. So no need to grab the remote for the amp to turn the volume up down. I have a home theatre set up with a projector. So this device is perfect to feed content. Once setup I have all my apps loaded ready to go, Netflix, Youtube, Kayo, Plex, and all the free to air apps from ch 7 9 10 SBS ABC all good to go. No need now for a separate set top box. Works well, nice and quick to load apps and stream. Great value for money.

Actually pretty amazing

This is absolutely perfect for people who don't want to flick through apps to find things to watch. All free to air channels can be watched through it too so you never need to switch between hdmi's. For people who aren't great with technology this is the device everyone's been waiting for, for the last 5 years. Even has Kayo, nothing but positive feedback from me.

Chromecast with Google TV Review

The Chromecast with Google TV is an excellent, feature packed streaming stick that matches, if not beats its Fire and Roku competition, but there are a few odd omissions.

4K/60fps streaming ; HDR / Dolby Vision support ; Useful physical remote Google Assistant / smart home support;

Lacks some key apps, especially outside the US ; Could be a little nippier;
