GoPro Hero 8 Black

There's more to like about the GoPro Hero 8 Black because there appears to be less of it!

A GoPro that got in shape

The streamlined design and reimagined shape makes the GoPro Hero 8 Black's more pocketable, and therefore more portable. Meanwhile, folding fingers at the base let you swap mounts quickly, a new side door speeds up the battery changing process, and the lens is two times more impact resistant.

One smooth unit

Hero 8 Black is the smoothest GoPro yet with three levels of stabilization to suit your requirements. Couple that with the widest views possible and your footage reaches dramatic new heights.  As a big plus, HyperSmooth works with all resolutions and frame rates, and features in-app horizon levelling.

Let's do the time warp again

TimeWarp 2.0 captures super stabilized time lapse videos and can automatically adjust the speed based on motion, scene detection and lighting. Another neat trick you can play is to slow down the effect to real time and then tap to speed it back up when you're ready.

You'll love LiveBurst

This cool mode captures 1.5 seconds before and after you hit the shutter, allowing you to pick your preferred shot from 90 still images. Or, you can choose to share a 3-second 4K video clip.

Night Lapse Video

This feature makes it possible to shoot amazing time lapse videos at night in 4K, 2.7K 4:3, 1440p or 1080p.

Get the best view every time

It's easier than ever to get the best view regardless of what you're doing. Simply tap through these four lenses: Narrow, distortion-free Linear, Wide and SuperView.

GoPro Hero 8 Black review: Action replay

The Hero 8 Black is the successor to GoPro's excellent flagship action camera from 2018, the Hero 7 Black . The latter was a much-needed hit for GoPro thanks to one big new feature: HyperSmooth image stabilisation.

Built-in mounting fingers; Minor improvements to video and audio quality; UI now more customisable; HyperSmooth stabilisation works in all resolutions and frame rates

Expensive compared to Hero 7 Black and DJI Osmo Action; Lens cover no longer removable; Mods accessories not yet available

GoPro Hero 8 Black review: smooth operator

It's that time of the year again. Fall brings us, along with decorative gourds, new GoPros. Other brands such as DJI have been threatening to eat GoPro's lunch, recently, while the past couple of revisions of GoPro's signature camera have largely been iterative.

New design doesn't require special housing for mounts; Image stabilization is even better than before; New Mods attachments provide more versatility

Camera gets very hot while recording; New fixed lens isn't as easy to repair as prior models; May not be as rugged as earlier GoPro cameras

GoPro Hero 8 Black Review

The best GoPro yet, but without its Mod accessories the Hero 8 Black is only a mild improvement on its predecessor – and one that struggles to justify its £50 premium over the Hero 7 Black or DJI Osmo Action. There are minor upgrades to video quality, audio and HyperSmooth stabilisation, plus that useful built-in mount. Its UI tweaks also mean it's the most refined, customisable GoPro yet. But its price tag ignores the arrival of the cheaper DJI Osmo Action and the Hero 7 Black, which will remain on sale for £319 and is a better value action cam for most people.

Exactly what I needed

I use this for reviewing my racing on a motorcycle. Had the 7 white previously and found it to be junk as wouldnt hold charge. Used hero 8 first time on the weekend and had no problem. Good footage and removable batteries so was always charged.

GoPro HERO8 Black CHDHX-801-RW review

A new body design and attachable accessories may attract a whole new crowd to GoPro.

No more cage. New add-ons make for easier vlogging. Customizable menus simplify using the camera in extreme conditions. Dozens of software improvements add up to better photos and videos.

New integrated lens cover is not replaceable, which means you have to be more careful with it.

GoPro Hero8 Black review: The best gets better

Last year’s Hero7 Black was GoPro’s biggest release in years. It introduced HyperSmooth, a type of electronic image stabilization (EIS) so good you didn’t need a gimbal — even for the roughest trail runs or rides. It was a truly useful innovation that set a new bar for EIS, and action cameras in general. It also raised an important question: Where could GoPro possibly go from there? The answer is the $400 Hero8 Black, which features the first physical redesign since 2016’s Hero5 Black and includes an integrated mount — that’s right, you can ditch the mounting frame. It’s also compatible with a new line of accessories, called Mods, which transform the camera into a powerful vlogging and storytelling tool. Then there’s HyperSmooth 2.0, which now works across all frame rates and resolutions. Combined with optional horizon leveling, it’s another leap forward for EIS. It’s only been a year, but with these and many other new features, the Hero8 Black compares very favorably against the Hero7...

Integrated mount; Ridiculously good stabilization; Automatic horizon leveling; Side access to battery and card; New "mod" support;

Small, 4:3 LCD screen;

GoPro Hero 8 Black review: Taking video capture to a new level

GoPro's latest action camera builds on the performance of the Hero 7 Black, offering more powerful processing, even more stable footage, built-in mounting arms, and a range of professional mods too.

Footage is impressively stable; Great quality 4K video; Built-in mounting arms are really useful; Single access for battery/mSD card

Battery life is still limited; Slightly bigger than previous model; Power/Mode button isn't as easy to press
