How The West Was Lost

I have to admit that like a lot of other people, I was looking forward to Damnation. I love games set in the old West, and the addition of an alternate timeline and a steampunk theme made this one even better, at least on paper.

Damnation review

Let's make this clear right away: Damnation is a game that lives up to its name. A game that promises a lot with its Steam-punk theme and its grand scale, but fails to live up to expectations. A game that is ultimately damned. To understand why, we need to look at where things went wrong.

"Damnation (PS3) Torment and annoyance. Not for me!"

You play a charcter called Hamilton Rourke in third person. He's a member of a rebel gang in 19th century America, during which time steam-powered robots and technological weapons were introduced.
Pros:
  • Great moves
  • Easy to follow story line
Cons:
  • Boring
  • Annoying
  • Poor gameplay, graphics and sound effects

Damnation

Damnation is a shooting / climbing game given a steampunk twist that is set around the time of an American civil war, where oddly, both sides lost and a military industrial company, PSI, have risen to power instead (they're the baddies).

Damnation

It was bound to happen, but I never imagined my first two big letdowns of 2009 would hit nearly back to back-nor that Sacred 2 or Damnation would be among them, two games I had very high hopes for.

This third-person shooter is a trip into hell.

Damnation's biggest accomplishment is making steampunk look bad. Even the usually cool mashing up of fantasy and sci-fi can't save developer Blue Omega Entertainment's mess of a third-person shooter.
Pros:
  • Out-of-the-ordinary steampunk story and setting
  • Some of the leaping-around acrobatics can be mildly amusing
Cons:
  • Mindless combat
  • Shooting-gallery enemy AI
  • Annoying frame rate hitches and visual bugs
  • Abysmal voice acting
  • Grating weapon sound effects

PS3 Review: Damnation

If you haven't worked it out by now, Damnation is a terrible game. It lacks anything memorable, it isn't fun to play and it feels unfinished. Let's hope this bad trend doesn't continue any further…

PS3 Review - 'Damnation'

Damnation features open environments, frenetic combat, daredevil acrobatics and high-octane vehicle-based stunts. Presenting players with an intense test of reflexes, quick thinking and rapid-fire conflict, Damnation will feature vast landscapes, each covering miles of distance and thousands of...

Damnation Review

It seems the thought process behind Damnation was something along the lines of:  Gears is a good game, let's do a Gear knock off, but our USP will be a Tomb Raider platform mechanic.
