DJI Osmo Action

DJI Osmo Action is the leading Chinese drone company DJI's first action camera. It's a natural market expansion for DJI, since drones and action cameras are complementary products. Osmo Action competes head-to-head with the GoPro Hero8 Black. Will it take market share from GoPro? Time will tell, but it retails for about $170 less and boasts advanced hardware. Hence, GoPro has a new fierce competitor in the market.

Osmo Action records video in 4K format at 60 fps (frames per second) and 100 Mbps. The framerate increases to 120 fps for 1080 format. These specs ensure that the recordings are always crisp.

DJI Osmo Action Review

DJI's rumored Osmo Action is finally here, and while it doesn't look radically different from other action cameras, it does bring a couple genuinely innovative features to what is otherwise a very imitative design.

Great electronic image stabilization; Screw-on filters; Front LCD; Large; 16:9 rear LCD; 4K/60; 1080p/240

Stabilization; lens correction softens video; Mobile app needs work

DJI OSMO Action: In-Depth Review of DJI's First Action Camera

The day has finally arrived that everyone predicted would eventually come: DJI has announced an action camera. For realz this time, not a small hand-held gimbal that's sorta like an action camera but not, not another drone that can be action-like, but now – a bona fide action camera – complete with...

DJI Osmo Action review: A GoPro killer

Rather than a big leap forward from GoPro's flagship, it refines some areas (usability, manual shooting options) while drawing level with the Hero 7 Black in others (video quality, stabilisation).

Video quality and stabilisation match the GoPro Hero 7 Black; Front screen is a real boon for vlogging; Most user-friendly action camera around; Versatile in manual shooting mode; Waterproof without needing a case; Cheaper than a Hero 7 Black

No live-streaming; No stabilisation in HDR mode; Official accessories not yet available; Still needs an external microphone for good audio

DJI Osmo Action review

We're so impressed with the Osmo Active that we're wondering why DJI hasn't been making action cameras for years.

DJI OSMO Action Camera OSMO ACTION review

The DJI Osmo Action is a small, waterproof action camera with 4K video and a full-color front LCD, but its stabilization isn't quite as good as rival GoPro.

Rugged, waterproof build; Stabilized 4K footage at up to 60fps; 1080p slow-motion at up to 240fps; Easily swappable filters; Supports HDR and flat profiles; Front and rear color displays; Filters included.

Battery life could be better; HDR video isn't stabilized; Stabilization not as good as GoPro; No tripod socket.

DJI Osmo Action Review

It doesn't blow the GoPro Hero 7 Black out of the water, but the Osmo Action's all-round performance and lower price mean it's our new number one action camera. Its front screen is a real boon for vlogging, and in most situations its video quality and stabilisation matches GoPro's flagship (without surpassing it). Speedy operation and a polished interface also make it the most user-friendly action camera around. In some areas (livestreaming, hyperlapse quality, accessories), GoPro still has the edge, but if you need a new waterproof camera for summer adventures then the Osmo Action is the best around.

DJI Osmo Action hands-on review

DJI’s rumored Osmo Action is finally here, and while it doesn’t look radically different from other action cameras, it does bring a couple genuinely innovative features to what is otherwise a very imitative design. The front LCD screen lets you check framing even if the main, rear screen is obscured, a common situation when mounting the camera to a bike frame, vehicle, or just a selfie stick. The replaceable lens cover lets you easily swap in polarizing or neutral density filters. HDR video adds 3 stops of dynamic range. But at its core, the Osmo Action is a straightforward action camera — and GoPro lookalike. To the untrained eye, the drab gray exterior could easily be mistaken for a Hero7. The user interface is built around a touchscreen and gesture commands that are a near facsimile of GoPro’s. Naturally, it also uses the standard GoPro mount, making it compatible with a wide range of accessories. DJI didn’t set out to reinvent the wheel. They borrowed what could be borrowed and inn...

GoPro Better Watch Its Back

Full-color front-facing selfie screen; solid image stabilization

Lacks HDMI out; too easy to drown

The new Osmo Action is so GoPro-like, it's almost insulting. But calling DJI's new action cam a GoPro clone ignores the innovative tweaks that set the Osmo Action apart. DJI has been creating solid cameras for its drones and gimbals for years.
