Canon RF 85mm F1.2 L USM Review

Canon sells two editions of its RF 85mm F1.2 L USM lens. We reviewed the premium RF 85mm F1.2 L USM DS ($2,999) last year, and are following up with a look at the standard edition, priced at $2,699. It omits the Defocus Smoothing filter, an optical element that changes the way background blur shows in images and reduces light transmission. Photographers who work in challenging light may prefer the RF 85mm F1.2 L USM, and it's nearly as fantastic a performer as its twin. We give preference to the rendering of the DS version, our Editors' Choice winner.F1.2 Optics The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM is fairly squat, coming in at 4.6 by 4.1 inches (HD). It's hefty too, at 2.6 pounds, with a big front glass element that takes 82mm front filters. That's the cost of a lens that gathers as much light as this one does. If you want a lighter prime for portraits, the RF 85mm F2 Macro weighs just 17.6 ounces and can be had for around $600. The low-cost 85mm F2 isn't an L series lens, though, so it's not...

The Canon RF 85mm F1.2 L USM lens snaps shots with a razor-thin depth of focus and is ideal for use in extremely dim light, but we think it's worth getting the premium DS variation instead.

Extra-bright f/1.2 optics; Excellent resolution; Dust, splash, and fluorine protection; Reliable autofocus; Customizable control ring

Background blur not as pleasing as DS edition; Hefty; Visible focus breathing

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens RF85LUSM review

The quality of the lenses arriving on the market has arguably never been better. There are some amazing optics and the only downside seems to be that the prices can be equally amazing. The more adventurous the specification of course, the higher that price will be.

Outstanding sharpness; Virtually no distortion; Very low CA; Beautiful bokeh; Highest quality manufacture; Very resistant to flare; Fast and very accurate AF; Weather-resistant

No Image Stabilisation; High price; Not stable on a flat surface (larger than the camera body)

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens - Brand New review

The Canon RF 50mm f1.2L USM is a supremely well-corrected ‘standard’ prime lens for Canon’s EOS R mirrorless system. It delivers the optical goods in every regard with crisp details into the corners, minimal distortion, and very shallow depth-of-field effects with lovely rendering.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens - Brand New review

“The iPhone 14 isn't a huge upgrade compared to its predecessor. But with a great design, screen, performance, and cameras, that's far from a bad thing at all.”

Comfortable, high-end build, OLED screen looks fantastic, A15 chip performs great, Good camera upgrades, Dependable battery life, Helpful safety features

60Hz display, No telephoto camera, eSIM might be a pain for some

The iPhone 14 isn’t much of an upgrade over the iPhone 13, but it’s still a great device and an upgrade for anyone coming from the iPhone 11 or older.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens - Brand New review

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens - Brand New review

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM is an incredible lens with a pretty incredible price-tag. It's easily one of the best 50mm lenses that we've ever reviewed, from any brand, but it's also one of the biggest and most expensive too.
