This lens is Canon's ‘cheaper' version of the highly rated 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM. Leaving out the Image Stabilisation and making the lens one stop slower at f/4 make the saving. Otherwise, Canon claim it has the same quality glass and construction.
Great build quality; Good and consistent performance for price; Silent and quick autofocus
Chromatic aberration on the borderline; Tripod mount not included in the price
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens is arguably Canon's best value "L" Lens , combining professional grade build and optical qualities . Though solidly built , the 70-200 f/4L is relatively light (25 oz / 705g).
The EF70-200/4L is one of Canon's least expensive "L" series lenses. Using both fluorite and low dispersion glass optics, the lens is very sharp though out the zoom range and maintains a constant f4 maximum aperture.
Hands on
Canon users were always gifted with a broad range of excellent tele lenses, especially zooms. At the time the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L hit the market back in 1999 it was another milestone but there was one itch left: wouldn't it be nice to have this lens with an image stabilizer ?
Canon's EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM costs around £800 and has an Image Stabiliser, silent Ultrasonic focusing with full time manual override and is sealed against dust and moisture.
Excellent optical quality; Superb build quality; Very effective image stabilisation; Fast to focus; Sealed against weather and dust; Light weight
Sometime miss-focuses near minimum focus distance
This lens is a blessing to shoot all day as it is half the weight of the f2.8 one and price, you can't go wrong if you one of these in your bag.
I like this lens so much its on my camera 95% of the time
I don't have any problems with this lens
I have owned this lens for a long time. I purchased it because of its versatility, it give very sharp images, it's not to heavy, and built like a tank. It's an excellent alternative to the more expensive ones like the I.S. and the 2.8 version. It's also lighter.
I got the new lens and immediately went out and did 2 photo shoots in 1 day. I didn't know I was such a great photographer (tee hee). All jokes aside this is my first L series lens and it was such a joy to use it. The lens caught focus quickly and the photos came out fabulous.
