I've only used it for a couple of days but it seems to be in just as good a condition as advertised. No scratches, no visible damage. Works great. Good stuff. Fun fact. I chose the seller with the best lens picture.

I am disappointed this is not the unit I thought I was buying. It was the only "L" USM 400mm f/5.6 CANON lens so silly me as I have ended up without image stabiliser & the item I wanted. I now note the "EF" may need to be "IS". Had I made a retail purchase I would have seen this
For whatever reason the manufacturers are only offering few "affordable" tele prime lenses today. The Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 USM L is the last of its species (slow speed 400mm) that it marketed today - there used to be a Pentax FA* 400mm f/5.6 and a Minolta AF 400mm f/4.5 APO but these are history...
My previous 100-400mm L IS USM lens seemed to produce shots which lacked sharpness, particularly noticeable in reduced fine feather detail when photographing birds. This 400mm f5.6 prime lens is much crisper and gives much improved results.
Lightweight; Quick Focus; Sharp Focus; Strong Construction
No Image Stabilisation
This lens is light enough to carry comfortably in its case on a belt and/or with the shoulder strap and cheap enough for some of us to buy without a mortgage on the house. This is possible because it does not have IS and it is limited to an aperture of F 5.6, which are its cons.
Consistent Output; Durable; Easily Interchangeable; Fast / accurate auto-focus; Good quality case; Integrated lens hood; Lightweight; Nice Bokeh; Rugged; Strong Construction
No Image Stabilization; Poor in Low Light
Pros: I have had numerous favorable photography gear purchases from buydig.com and my new Canon 400mm 5.6L is no exception. It's a sharp, telephoto lens with a wonderful bokeh not to mention it is rather light weight. So it's easy to carry by hand vs. requiring a tripod.
This lens is one of the great values in photography. It is super sharp and does a great job of bringing the action to you. While it does not have image stabilization, it is light enough to hand hold and with some practice you can get great shots.
Image quality; weight; build quality
No image stabilization; maximum aperture f/5.6
This is the ultimate best birding lens for hobbyist photographers. I agree, in theory the EF 300mm f/4L IS + 1.4x extender should be better but actually it isn't as per users' opinions. I have owned this lens for 17 months and shot thousands of images with it mounted on my EOS 450D and EOS 50D.
a; Lightweight b; Affordable c; Sharp d; Fast autofocus
a; Lack of weather sealing
Just purchased this lens and have spent time out birding. I've used it with and without an EF Extender 1.4x, and both hand-held and on a solid tripod. I'm very pleased: without the extender you can (with large hands and steady arms) shoot hand-held for quite a while.
