If you want a router that will future proof your purchases for when VDSL or fibre comes to your neighbourhood, give the Asus DSL-AC56U serious thought. Asus RT-AC56U

If you don't plan on putting your router through some hard work this will do just fine. If you tend to punish your routers with multiple users, P2P, and streaming. Look at a beefier model. Heavy traffic and the WIFI transmitter overheats the unit to the point where it freezes up.
Pros:
  • Small footprint
  • Easy User Interface
  • Nice look
Cons:
  • Cooling
  • Reliability

Asus RT-AC56R

I bought this for a little over $100.00 and hooked it up in my home which is almost 3000 square feet (one story). It reaches ALMOST to the very ends of the residence. When you get into the farthest bedroom, you only have 1 bar, but that is better than MANY others I have tried.
Pros:
  • Excellent cover range
Cons:
  • None so far

Router cannot consistently work well

This router will work fine for a while and then slow down to about 1/10th of its normal speed. Turning it off and on a number of times usually gets it working again, but it will eventually just slow down again.

Having a router that can do a bit of everything can mean the difference between business downtime and staying online, even when one of your connections fails. The AC56U from ASUS is one such router, thanks to support for a pretty extensive range of connection types.
