Acer Iconia Tab A100 7in Honeycomb tablet computer

Tablet computers running the Android operating system started to appear after the Apple iPad but they were flawed – the older Android 2 was designed for phones, not tablets, and so the tablets running it just weren't much good.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 review

Acer's new Iconia Tab A100 is the first 7in tablet we've seen that uses the latest version of Android's tablet OS - we were expecting more by now, but there's been some speculation that Google was having trouble getting Android version 3 and above to look right on 7in rather than 10in screens.

Acer Iconia Tab A100

Note: the Iconia Tab A100 is the seven-inch version of the Iconia Tab A500 tablet, which we've already reviewed.  A lot of things-especially in software terms-are the same.  That's why we refer you back to our previous
Pros:
  • Seven-inch form factor is very portable
  • Generally respsonive
  • Screen has good contrast
  • Plenty of inputs and outputs
  • Useful software with good quality exclusive apps provided by Acer
Cons:
  • TN panel has poor viewing angles and worse brightness
  • Poor battery life
  • Can be a little cramped
  • Only charges via a socket (not over USB
  • Dreadful camera

Acer Iconia A100

Acer was the first of its computer counterparts on the scene with an Android Honeycomb tablet, and it's first again to follow up, with a 7-inch alternative. The A100 is smaller and lighter than the A500 , but is it small enough and light enough to make for a true alternative to a 10-inch tab?
Pros:
  • Solid performance
  • HDMI-out
  • Excellent web browsing
Cons:
  • Poor screen with awful off-axis viewing
  • Thicker and heavier than we'd like it to be

Acer Iconia A100

While we're glad to see a 7-inch alternative in the Android Honeycomb landscape, we can only wish that the A100 was better. Although it gave us solid performance and sports a decent range of connectivity, the screen is a shocker, and its size and weight are more substantial than we'd like.
Pros:
  • Solid performance
  • HDMI-out
  • Excellent web browsing
Cons:
  • Poor screen with awful off-axis viewing
  • Thicker and heavier than we'd like it to be
