Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB (WD1000DHTZ) Review

There was a time when Western Digital's Raptor (and later, the VelociRaptor) was a staple of any high-end desktop build. Rotational media could only deliver better performance by increasing aereal density or spindle speed.

Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB Review

While SSDs get all the attention when it comes to high-performance storage, the venerable platter-based alternatives aren't dead yet. First, I hope you haven't read through this review and deduced that the WD1000DHTZ drive as a failure…as that is surely not the case. To be fair, we weren't comparing apples to apples in this review as no HDD will ever directly compete with an SSD.

WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ

The 1TB WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ is the first hard drive I have reviewed in a long time and that's because it's among only a few on the market that can be considered an alternative to standard solid-state drives (SSDs).

The WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ offers great performance and offers 1TB of storage space

The new WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ is noticeably more expensive than regular hard drives of the same capacity

Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB Hard Drive Review

Since the flooding in Thailand devastated hard drive production capacity, Western Digital's product releases have fallen behind as they've focused upon rebuilding and getting back to pre-flood production and development levels.

Monster speed

I bought two of these hard drives to support my super computer which has 2No GTX 690's in Sli mode, i7 3960X Extreme CPU and Asus Rampage IV Motherboard. I have actually just plugged them into my Sata II port, because my Sata III port are fully occupied, but none the less I am receiving super fast...

Western Digital recently sent us its latest-generation VelociRaptor, a 1 TB update to what was already the fastest 3.5" disk drive available. Once again, it stymies the mechanical competition with significantly higher performance.
