Max Payne 3 review: Slick, bloody, beautiful... but not without its flaws

A slick, violent shooter, made with Rockstar's trademark style and panache. But it's marred by a lack of variety and an overlong story.

Ultra-polished shooter; packed with visceral; brutal shootouts; Looks beautiful; with outstanding attention to detail; Euphoria physics bring every firefight to life; Great multiplayer

Far too long - after 6-7 hours; you've seen everything it has to offer; Not enough depth to the combat; Feels a little one-note

Max Payne 3

It's safe to say that Max Payne 3 is a fantastic game and with a hefty single player and extensive multiplayer it will keep you entertained for hours and hours. The story is gripping and will have you wondering what happens next, and with the integration of crews to the multiplayer there is even...

Bullet Time is a ton of fun to use; The locales are beautiful and it feels very polished; Multiplayer is extensive and will keep you busy for a long time

Some fights can be a little overwhelming

Max Payne 3 (Xbox 360)

Max hasn't had a good life so far. His career is over, his wife and child were murdered, and he's washed up and firmly inside the bottle. When an argument in a backstreet bar in New Jersey turns nasty and a mysterious stranger offers him a lifeline, he has nothing to lose.

Max Payne 3 Xbox 360 Review

There was a morbid curiosity mixed in with my desire to play a Max Payne game developed internally by Rockstar. As a pinnacle of sorts of early third person action games, the pure arcade appeal at the centre of Remedy's original – a film noire pastiche and homage to graphic novels and Hong Kong...

Max Payne 3 - Review

Its time to bring the Payne. When the wife of Brazilian real estate mogul Rodrigo Branco is kidnapped, its up to Max Payne to tear the city of Sao Paolo apart to get her back. From the slums of the favelas, to the penthouses and skyscrapers of the big city, no one is safe from Max as he issues a...

Max Payne 3 Reviewed

This isn't a game where the new developers try to recreate a game to appease the fans. Rockstar has taken the established elements of the series and forged its own path with a different but similar take on Max's life.

Max Payne 3 B>: Max is a man with the worst luck in the world, even though it does make for one of my favourite game series ever.

Max Payne 3 – review

Max Payne is looking pretty good for his age. Well, Max himself is looking awful; older, fatter, drunker, and sporting a beard that only serves to highlight his more than passing resemblance to Humphrey Bogart. But Max Payne 3 looks absolutely amazing.

'Max Payne 3' review (Xbox 360)

has been a long time coming, releasing nine years after its predecessor and more than a decade after the original game impressed with its bullet-time gameplay mechanic. The gaming landscape has changed dramatically since the noughties, however.

Max Payne 3

Despite a scenery change for Payne, old habits die hard for the game's leading protagonist.
