Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is a trip down memory lane. I'm glad to see Sega giving the title and the series a second chance with its release on the PS4. The same great experience remains intact, but with the added dlc and trophy support.

"Beautiful." That's the first word I use to describe Valkyria Chronicles Remastered . I'm not just talking about its visuals, though the term certainly applies. I'm talking about the entire experience. The story. The sound. The characters. The gameplay. All of it is just beautiful.

The theme is a grand and mighty one: freedom and the fight against oppression from bigger nations. Placed in an alternative version of Europe in 1953, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered lets you play as a small nation squashed between two empires waging war against each other.

It's clear at this point that the PlayStation 4 has become a far more successful console than its predecessor, which is probably why we are seeing so many remastered re-releases of PS3 games (the lack of proper backwards compatibility with the PS4 likely played a factor as well).

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is as great a title today as it was when I reviewed the original release nearly eight years ago, but now there's more of it. In fact, I enjoyed it more today than I did back then, thanks to the additional side content.

In a console generation that has become increasingly overrun with remakes and remasters, it is easy to understand why some have begun to take a rather cynical approach to these releases. Personally, it is very rare that I hear about one of these releases and get excited.

Sega somehow managed to make the game look EVEN MORE amazing on PS4; Everything that you loved about the game the first time around is back and better than ever

All of the cheap, end-of-battle, twist shenanigans are still as prevalent the second time around; Some of the more sizable missions tend to go on for too long

A low-cost way to play one of the best sleeper hits of last gen.

Feels like a 2016 game – highly entertaining; All DLC is included and looks gorgeous in HD; Trophy support

Getting one-hit killed from a random soldier can be frustratingly unfair; No newly created content

As bizarre a mix of genres, art style, and subject matter as you could ever hope to see. But it all works together surprisingly well and this remaster is well deserved.

Some very clever spins on traditional turn-based combat; Nicely humanised units and a good diversity of class types; Cel-shaded artwork still looks great after all these years

Some inconsistent logic during battles, as well as some rather limited artificial intelligence; Tank controls are very twitchy; Pre-rendered cut scenes look bad

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930s Europe - divided in two and ruled by the Empire and the Federation. The game follows a hero named Welkin and his fellow soldiers of the Federation's 7th Platoon as they engage in a series of epic battles.

Although Sega hasn't added anything to this PlayStation 4 port, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered remains an exciting mix of third-person shooting and strategy role-playing. The lengthy quest can be a bit wordy at times, but that doesn't overshadow the great visuals and fun missions.
