Whilst playing Ubisoft Paris' Ghost Recon Wildlands , I found it impossible not to consider its context. I'm not referring to the recent controversy between the Bolivian and French governments regarding its setting, but rather the spate of open-world games we've seen released over the last few years...

Fantastic gun play; More players means more fun; Loads to do

Forgettable story; Dull villains; An absolute bore if you're playing solo

This game is incredibly fun with friends as there is an almost unlimited number of missions to do in a completely open world map. The graphics of the game are crazy good and the gameplay is fairly realistic.

Ultimately, that's Wildlands' main issue. There's a pretty decent core to it, but everything from the monotonous mission design to the way the characters are introduced and immediately discarded to the lame audio to the overpowered AI just chips away at different parts of the game until you're left...

As an open world co-op shooter there's a lot to enjoy here, at least until you realise how shallow and repetitive the underlying action is.

No real innovation or surprises, with an unreliable cover system and mediocre artificial intelligence; Very little fun on your own; Politically questionable story

Co-op games have sort of become a lost art. Developers often conflate the idea of co-operation simply by adding an extra person to what was already happening. A solid open world shooter with a tactical flavor that adds a bit of variety to otherwise repetitive objectives, Ghost Recon Wildlands is at its best when you join a squad of real people, and lay waste to the Santa Blanca cartel together. Just don't go into it expecting engaging characters or plot.

There's an advert on the television at the moment for the army, featuring five or six soldiers walking through intense snowy weather conditions, when one of them starts singing (I've had) The Time
